KIDS TRIM SAILORS IN EXHIBITION TILT A “pick-up” team made up of the youngsters who last year played as the Sons of the Amer- ican Legion, turned out at Bay- view Park last night to trim Navy, ‘6-3, in the first game of a doubleheader, with the Plumb- ers whipping Army, 13-4, in the other half. The ex-Legion team, replacing the NavStas for the night, will enter the league for the second- half series ‘starting next. week. Ralph Arnold, who:caught for ‘the youngsters last. night, will captain the team. ‘DeWitt Rob- erts did the tossing for them, opposing Guy Johnson, Navy captain, who has played all over the infield and finally wound up as_a pitcher. A triple by Bob Elliott in the} third inning when two on shot the Bues out front and there they re- mained at the end of a 4-3 fight. Mickey Owen, Dodger catcher All-Star backstops for the annual fight with American league leaders next week, was hit on the head by a pitched ball. One of John Podgajny’s tosses in the second inning opened a wound over his left eye and six stitches were re- quiredtoclose the cut. Owen wobably will not see action in he AlkStat game at Detroit. Biooklyn mastered the Phillies $-2 onthe strength of six-hit pitching ‘by Whitlow Wyatt and the batting of Pete Reiser and Cookie Lavagetto. Both of the Phil scores were homers, one by by Litwhiler in the sixth. Reiser tripled in the first and homered in the seventl. Wyatt annexed his 12th victory. New York Giants and Boston Braves fought 0-0 for 11 innings !and then the New Yorkers tal- lied thrice in the 12th to snatch the duel. Cliff Melton, who went the route, limited the Braves to six hits, while the Giants got to Manny Salvo for 11. Melton opened the three-run rally in the 12th with a single. Cincinnati Reds pounced on old Charlie Root for five runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the Chicago Cubs, 7-1. The victory was the eighth straight for Elmer Riddle without a sin- gle loss. Detroit Tigers went one-up in their half of the ninth but the Chicago White ‘Sox came right back to knock Schoolboy Rowe out of the box, score two runs and clinch the game. John Rig- ney, thereby, won his fifth start of the year. Rudy York poled his 16th four-bagger in the 6th. | Bob. Feller, for the second suc- cessive game he has started, was batted out of the box. The St. Louis Browns banged out nine runs in the seventh, sent Feller to the showers and went on to win over the Cleveland Indians, 12-6.
