The,.pair probably will be gone about a week. Miss Benildes Remond, prin- cipal of San Carlos School left yesterday for Havana, to spend her summer vacation. While there she is going to take a special course in Spanish teaching, to English speaking students, offer- ed this summer by the University of Havana, to American and South American teachers. (By MARIE GERMANN) es i @ The Navy Wives Club, with our new president, Gladys Arn- old, at the helm, is growing by Jeaps and bounds. We want to let all Navy wives in Key West club, and we're extending an in- vitation for them to join us every Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. Our interests at these meet- ings are varied. We play cards for prizes most every Friday and serve a lunch- eon once a mdnth, Sew on layettes and always keep a number of them ahead. Monday night we had another one of our famous pot luck sup-/ pers, which turned into a com- bination farewell and eet party. We said good bye to Walter L.| Arnold, chief’ pharmacist’ mate, our president's husband, who left for sea duty. WINNER, HAD HIS CAR EQUIPPED WITH FIRESTONE PRODUCT Driving his teammate’s car jfrom 15th place to a spectacular | victory in one of the most drama-} tic races ever held at the historic |Indianapolis Speedway, Mauri Rose won his first 500-mile race on May 30th. Starting the race in the coveted pole position by reason of his {highest qualifying speed of 128.691, Rose was well up with the leaders when his car developed engine trouble after 155 miles and was forced out of the race. Lou Moore, owner of the car which ;Hose had been driving, asked | Rose to relieve Floyd Davis, who | was driving another one of |Moore’s cars and Rose drove to victory at an average speed of 115.117 miles per hour without a tire change or tire trouble of any kind. This was the 22nd con- secutive year that Firestone Tires have been on*the winning cars in | this great race. One-by one, Rose passed . the other cars}in the race until he had his car in)4th - position... At the 380 mile:smark a broken . wheel. eliminated ‘Wilbur Shaw, defend- ing champion and _ three-time winner, who was leading the race at that point. Driving spec- tacularly around the turns and brilliantly on the straightaways, Mauri Rose soon overtook the other leading cars and swept across the finish line in a final burst of speed. After completing an extra lap around the 2% mile track, Rose pulled into the pits to let Floyd Davis drive the winning car into victory lane. Davis, how- ever, already was waiting in the winner’s pén to congratulate |Rose on his remarkable exhibi- | tion of driving. This is only the second time in the history of the Indianapolis Sweepstakes that two drivers have shared the championship as co-winners. Rex Mays, popular California driver, won second place money for the second consecutive year. He was followed across the finish line by Ted Horn, Ralph Hepburn and Cliff Bergere, in that order, all them riding on Firestone Tires. { ASTER ERE RAEN a a ne ad the WPA Key West Art Center.
