TUESDAY, MAY 20, 1941 Barbers Marder Sailors 23-0 In Season’s First | Shutout; Stas In Third League - Leaders Played Errorless Ball As Neno Castro Turned In Two- Hit Performance Sawyer'’s league-leading Bar- bers played erroriess ball last night to hand the last-place Navy a resounding thumping at Bay- view Park to the tune of 23-0. The Barbers’ runaway triumph marked the first time this season a team has covered the seven- inning route without an_ error, and ‘the game was the season’s first shutout. Sawyers, a full-game out in front and apparently hitting their stride at the bat, get their biggest test Friday night when they tackle the city champion Plumbers in the first clash of the teams this season. Under the peculiar schedule set up. this year, the teams have marched through the first half of the sea- son without meeting, but now will play each other at regular intervals in the last half. Nen» Castro, behind support, limited Navy to two hits last night, a single by all- round performer Johnson and a two-bagger by leftfielder Hierns. Castro struck out five and walk- ed six. The Barbers, scoring in every inning but the third, turned the game into a hopeless rout for Navy when they blasted home 13 runs in the sixth on a string of singles and Sailor errors. Every man on the team scored at least once and racked up at least one safety in the 23-hit attack. Monk Kerr, Barber captain and first baseman, led the hit- ters, getting five for five, with two doubles. The rest of the players followed with John Rob- erts, rightfielder, tallying four for five; Ralph (Flash) Arnold, rokie infielder, three for five; DeWitt Roberts, rookie pitcher- outfielder, three for five; Ar- thur (Reese) Thompson, rookie leftfielder, Leo Stanley, veteran outfielder, and “Kiki” Hopkins, infielder, two for four each. Or- mond Cordoya, rookie second baseman playing his first game | with the Barbers, poled a three- bagger. Melvin Tynes, center- fielder, and Castro, each tallied one hit. Kerr executed a double in the fourth when Johnson singled for the first Navy hit and Poret, heavy-hitting Sailor shortstop, slammed a line drive to first base. Kerr speared the! liner, stepped on the bag and both men were out Local fans are waiting for the Barber-Plumber clash Friday, which will be+the first game be- tween the teams since Sept. 9, 1940, In the opening game of the Civilian league schedule last year, players on the two clubs became involved in an argument, and when a Board of Comission- ers decided in favor of the Plumbers, the Sawyer team with- drew from the league. Although a full game out of the lead, the Peppers are expect- ed to win’ their game tomorrow night, pulling within a_ hailf- game of the leaders and putting themselves in a position where a victory over the Barbers will land them on top of the heap. | *, The scoring by innings: R.
