Since The Citizen’s editorial a week | ego on the subject of juvenile delinquency, it has been startling to learn from law en- | forcement officers involved just how the problem is being handled here—or not handled. In the first place The Citizen sug- : gested at that time that Probation Officer ‘rank Velasco’s department would be giv- ing a better aceount of itself if it required some of the boys who were being arrested | as petty thieves to absorb @ little school | work. Sending war material to helpless na- tions makes the loot and booty that much greater for the conquering nations. The same applies to the transportation of food to the conquered nations. If the Germans do not gobble it up themselves, the food sustains the conquered and keeps him in | condition to produce for the conquerer so that He can continue his aggressions on | other weaker nations. Such benevolence | does not work out right. Althcugh impeded by stvikeg, many of the nation’s plants are humming at top speed. In a recent hearing, mony showed that most of the boys either were without one or both parents, were part of such large families that no control was possible, or had parents whom sickness or work kept from exercising any dis- cipline. The wave of petty thievery this win- ter caused wide comment and did Key West | no good among winter visitors who suf- ‘ered, or heard of others who did. The sheriff’s office now Kas fairly definitely és- tablished where most of the stolen articles went. If anything more is going to be done, either in prevention, which would help the boys before they get in more serious trouble, | | or in punishment, which probably wouldn’t do anyone a great deal of good, the city and county are going to have to do it. AXIS PLANS 'GO AWRY While it is too early to judge the full import of recent Axis reverses, it is certain that they have seriously upset Hitler’s plans for a speedy conquest of Britain. At the same time, fhese events have confirmed the belief that this summer will present Hitler's last possible chance for final victory. Tt is still certain, however, that Eng- land isin for a terrible struggle during the next few months, buf her prospects. for withstanding German air and sea assaults are much brighter than they were a few weeks ago. So far as Germany’s Axis partners are concerned, it is difficult to see how either Italy cr Japan can give much aid to Hitler. Japan now knows that the United States fleet will, if necessary, take care of both | American and British interests in the Far East, and the presence of our warships in that area will probably release some British vessels for duty in the Atlantic. The de- teat of the Italian fleet will also enable Britain to send a part of her Mediterranean naval force into Atlantic waters. an aid to Britain should def- tide during Ameri initely and finally turn the 1941. REPUBLICS Dr. Wesley Frost, recently appointed Minister to Paraguay, asserts thatthe nations of the Americas are Republics not 7 merely in name, but in essential fact.” The statement is encouraging ir view of the general belief that most of the Latin American countries are being ruled by dic- tators. While this may be true, we presame that Dr. Frost based his observation upon the historical fact that when South and Cen- tral American nations won their indepen-t- ence, they set up systems of government patterned after that of the United States. March 7, but the regular edition did not come out until a few davs ago, on April 7.. A thril- ling story of adventure on a re- mote Florida Kev, the story is re- ported to have sold exceptionally well in Florida during the past month, and its reception through- out the nation promises to be very ood. Recently Republic Pictures an- nounced that they had acquired j; motion picture rights to “Mercy {Island,” and that a crew of cameramen would soon be sent to the Keys to make location shots. Stetson Kennedy is well known locally for having written the Key West Historical Pageant, and for his work on the Florida Keys Tour and the Key West Guide while he was local supervisor of \the Writers’ Project. His stories and afticles about Key West‘ have appeared in such magazines as Di- rection, Literary, Florida, The Crisis, and Florida. He is in Key West now, gathering material for his first book, a volume on Florida fclkways. |KEY WEST IN DAYS GONE BY Happenings On This Date Ten Years Ago As Taken From Files Of The Citizen The U.S. Department of Com- merce has assigned an operator to the radio station at the air? | ways landing field, according ta ia telegram received today at the | loffice of W.
