bees Hold Cage Lead By Downing Students, 70 - 42 Pandora Bears’ Forfeit Kept Marines Game Be- hind Pacesetters; De- ciding Battle Friday By RABID FANSTER Lions Club cagers last night doggedly held on to their slim margin over U.S. Marines in the “down-the-stretch” fight for Is- land City League’s second-half champicnship. Taking no chances with the lightweight High School quintet, the pacesetters ran up an early commanding lead and went on to almost set a new high-score record. As it were, they defeat- ed the Students. 70-42—38 points above the School’s total and just a single field goal less than the Jeague’s high mark. Pandora Bears afterpiece of the scheduled dou- bleheader to the Marines, who thus remained a game behind the Lions. The leading clubs will meet in the deciding battle of the season Friday night. Limiting the varsity players to a long, basket and a free shot in the opening quarter last night, the Civic boys piled up a 12-point margin, 15-3, and at intermis- sion were ahead, 38-11. Outpoint- ed 17-9 in the third period as the Students displayed a brief burst of speed, they went on a_ wild scoring spree in the final round to skyrocket their score from 47 to 70. Failing to set a new high-point record, the Lions established an- other mark. That is, guard Joe Pinder did. Leading the league in foul-shooting with an average of 68.4, Pinder practically clinch- ed leadership of this department by sinking six out of six free throws, a perfect percentage. The feat the peak of accuracy for that number of penalty tries this season. Joe was hard-pressed by Student center DeWitt Roberts, who shot five out of six. Rob- erts, third highest foul-shooter this half, topped the league in the first-half with an average of; 66,7. Pinder's nine field goals and six charity tosses ranked him as the fourth leading scorer in a single game this year. First three scor- ers are McMahon, High School, 27 points; Wm. Cates, Pepper’s Plumbers, 26, and Laney, Ma- rines, 25. Students compiled points in a league contest, but played three overtime riods in establishing that In a regular game, Lions hold the record, 71, one point more than they racked up last night. Varsity basketeers committed 14 personal fouls, majority oc- curring in the second-half of the game, and netted eight of thei 14 free throws. League-lead errored 12 times, forward Ch; lie Smith charged with four ‘P’ and sunk 10 out of 18 charity shots.
