PAGE FOUR SOCIETY u Garden Club's Flower Show Voted Outstanding Success; (By THEONE LLOYD) Key West Garden club mem- bers brought their most successful Flower Show to a close last night at the public library after nearly 1,500 visitors and residents had the exhibit. The show opened Saturday afternoon. Club officers expressed grati- tude to Col. G. D. Hatfield for the Marine corps guard which took part in the program and to Capt WwW. Jacobs, conden for coope Musicians from >A spiritual singers also helped in making the program a success, There were hothouse varie- ties, no greenhouse specimens, but were taken from yards, vacant lots, parks and along the beaches. The library itself looked like garden from Arabian Nights with palm fronds from floor to ceiling | and a profusion of color and ar- rangements that was breath- taking. | The tropical blossom display which w handled by Mrs J. The seeds and seed pods gath-' ered by Wallace Kirke were of particular interest to seed grow- ers, and contained over fifty dif- + ferent specimens. A couple of years ago, an owner of a northern seed company was so interested in the collection that he took the whole exhibit with him at the close of the Flower Show. The parrot, whose wide ac- quainta among Key West resi- aents was described in The Citi- zen about three years ago, died Friday n at about 8:00 o'clock. Mrs. Elwood found the pet's body lying stiff on the floor of its cage when she returned from a revival meeting. Constable Elwood attempted to have the bird mounted, but was unable to find anyone who could do the job. The body has been encased in cement by Charles Richardson, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Elwood, and on the top of the block, he inscribed: “Blessings on thee, noble bird; The Master called and you have heard”. Elwood purchased the _ bird from Dr. Armando Cobo when it was six months old. At that time “Greenback” had picked up two words of Spanish, which he repeated occasionally, but since then all his conversation had been in English. “Greenback” wandered away from home about five years ago, but an ad in The Citizen brought him: back three days later. He “disappeared” on a number of occasions but always came _ back himself or was found soon after leaving his cage. He was fond of women and would call “Bye Polly” after them as long as they were within hearing. He would sit for hours in the branches of a hibiscus tree on the Elwood sidewalk and keep up a running conversation with pa by.
