GERMAN CHEMISTS MAKE PERFUME FROM TOBACCO BLOSSOMS (Py Associated Press) BERLIN, Jan. 11.—Tobacco blossoms are the source of a new German perfume, with a scent of combined hyacinths and carna- tions. Professor Dr. Koenig, director of the German tobacco Research institute, reports it is likely the new product will develop indus- trial uses. It has been produced through work of both botanists and chemists. Professor Koenig discloses also that the institute has extracted an edible oil from tobacco seed. It has the flavor of peanut oil. An oil cake is made from the seed, too. German scientists have pro- duced a tobacco which has only one-tenth of one percent tine. About 3,000,000 pounds was harvested. in 1959. SCHOOL WEDDINGS ARE DISCOURAGED (My Annocinted Presa) PORT ARTHUR, Tex., Jan. 11.-- Port Arthur school board officials were surprised to learn 15 pupils in Thomas Jefferson high school were married but they decided there was nothing they could do about it. They approved a notice designed to cast “official discour- agement” upon the situation be- cause such marriages have “a bad effect” upon other children.
