Under the leadership of co-managers, Paui Albury Ray Bush, the Pirate baseball will take the field Sunday afternoon at East Martello Tow- er with strong determination to defeat the Key West Conchs. There’s a good reason: Johnny was National A.A.U. heavyweight wrestler in 1939 and collegiate champion in 1938. Although the job of being Navy’s blocking back brings lit- tle applause from the stands, Johnny has learned to use his 6 foot, 202 pound frame to good advantage. He made a name for himself in the wrestling business at Okla- homa A. and M. college. He was an end on the Ardmore high school eleven but never played college football until he entered the academy in 1939. He really had little opportun- ity to play football at Oklahoma. Besides, he said, out there they didn’t like to mix football with wrestling. He entered college late in 1937 after working in the oil fields. The fall of 1938 he toured ‘Sweden, Germany, Holland, Bel- gium and England with the Na- tional’ A.A.U. team, winning all 12 of his bouts. Many of his plebe friends last: SIGNS—“For Rent”, “Rooms For year went out for football and he decided to report too. He subse- quently played regularly with the plebe team, soon exhibiting his blacking ability. This fall he managed to beat out Bub Boyer, varsity veteran, for the quarterback post. He says his wrestling prowess gives him balance and helps him in maneu- vering to block out his man. The gridiron is Johnny’s wres- tling mat and he sure loves to pin ‘em down.
