War Relief Worker While.more than 500,- 000 American women are engaged in the pro- duction of garments and surgical dressings for the war stricken of other nations, thousands of volunteers throughout the nation play an im- portant part in strength- ening our own 5 Volunteer blood do- nors enable the Army and Navy to perfect methods of plasma trans- fusions that may some day save thousands of lives. Through the Red Cross, a force of medical technologists is being mobilized for call by the Army and Navy in the event of national emergency. The Red Cross nursing reserve of 43,000 registered nurses is being strengthened for equally important work should they be needed. Conscription has meant heavy increases in the responsibilities of Red Cross field represen- tatives in naval and military posts. Even last year, with a skeletonized peace-time Army and problems of moze than 53,600 enlisted m-n needing help as a result of family and eco- nomic difficulties. Similarly, aid was given to more than 150,000 veterans of past wars by the Red Cross during the year. Although world conditions have imposod added obligations on the Red Cross at horse and abroad, disaster relief and the day-to-d-y services have resulted in one of the most active years. More than 100,009 victims of flood: nadoes, fires and other forms of disaster weve given emergency shelter, food, medical at‘: 1- tion and aided in rebuilding their homes. Sore 95,000 young Americans were trained in Lite Saving methods and water safety. The Junior Red Cross, America’s largest youth organization with a membership of 8,500,000, was active in community, natior! and international projects. From First Aid courses there were graduated 379,000 person, qualifying them to carry on the Red Cre tireless campaign against accidental death. More than 9,000,000 “check lists” were dis- tributed to urban and rural families as an edu- cational project designed to eliminate everyday accident hazards in the home and on the farm. Every patriotic man and woman in America is urged to aid in the Red Cross national de- fense preparedness “behind the lines” by jein- ing as a member of the local Red Cross Chapter during the annual Roll Call, November 11-30.
