While the number to be registered on October 16th is not known exactly, of course, it is believed that, based on mili- tary observance and National’ :averages, approximately 1500 will report to schools of Monrce County to fill out the registra- tion forms on that day. These young men will be this county’s contribution to the ef- fort now in full force to protect and strengthen our defenses against what- ever emergency may come. It’s going to be a school holiday for all pupils in the county nine days from now, as all teachers report for duty as registrars, serving under their principals and the Monroe County Selective Service Beard. Boys and girls, freed from school duties for the day, will probably be in a celebrating mood. It would be well for them, hbwever, to-reflect, in their own way, upon the seriousness of the day’s pro- ceedings and its meaning that may so very strongly affect their own future. The Gitizen joins all of Monroe Coun- ty in the fervent wish that none of those registered will'ever be ordered to join in warring movements against any other peo- ples cn earth. International situations ap- pear extremely precarious at present, and it may be that the United States cannot escape war. Nevertheless, as long peace holds, there is a majority hope pre- vailing that, somehow. the youth of our nation will not be offered up on the sacri- ficial alter of the war mongers. National defense has been proclaimed the best means towards keeping our na- tion out of v With that belief The Citizen agrees. And it is' worthy of note that Monroe County will not be found lack- ing in its responsibility in helping to build up strong defenses. tration for its young as ABOUT FEEDING OUR ENEMIES “If thy enemy hunger,” said the Apostle Paul, ‘feed him.” With this thought in mind, there are i individuals in the United States and Great | Britain who insist that steps should be taken to feed and clothe the destitute in European lands, occupied by German armies. There are some who insist that, if necessary, food should be sent to the pop- ulation of Germary to prevent suffering and starvation. We are not inclined to split hairs with those who, would uphold a literal observ- ance cf the instructions of the Apostle me, it seems to us that it would be the height of folly to send sup- plies to augment the strength of those who are bent upon destroying the civilization of free peoples. So far as we have been able to ob- serve from what has happened in Europe already, the success of Hitler would mean peoples every- where. ._The>German Fuehrer seems to be definitely against the interests of religion, even when we accord a broad definition to the word. Certainly, he is an enemy of the liberties that encourage the spiritual and his triumph would mean the end of opportunity for free-minded souls. In view of these facts, we are utterly opposed to sending food or clothing to any people under the domination of Hitler, or his allies. To do so would relieve Ger- nany of much responsibility and insure the Nazis against the discontent of conquered people. There is no reason for us alarmed about the possibilities of starva- tion as long as German leaders have the power to prevent it by giving up their schemes to dominate the to become nefarious world. Moreever, so long as German bombs rain upon the mhabitants of great cities, indiscriminately killing men, women and children, one cannot blame those fighting Hitler for the use of any weapon that will strike a blow in their defense.
