WEDNESDAY, JULY 3, 1940 DODGERS SLIP INFO FIRST ‘BLUE SOX TEAMS LEAVE THURSDA' PLACE AGAIN ro PLAY PICKED HOME- WIN GAME FROM PHILLIES, 4 TO 1; DETROIT TAKES OVER | | teams will LEAD OF AMERICAN CIR- CuIT {Special to The Citizen) NEW YORK. July 3—Well,; well! Brooklyn Dodgers are back in first place in the Nation- ; al League. It’s getting to be an old story—this switching busi- ness between the Dodgers and Cincinnati Reds. But both teams are reminded to beware of the Ides of July 4th. The old adage has it that the club ahead on that dav will come in winner for the fall classics. Dodgers defeated the Philadel- phia Phillies, 4 to 1, as Tex Carle- ton returned to top form, allow- ing the opponents only three hits. Joe Medwick and Pete Coscarart contributed home runs in the victory-hit-barrage. Chicago Cubs blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates. Big Bill Lee portioned out a meager five safe- ties to the Bucs. These, with a good eleven-hit attack by the NIGHT GAME (Special to The Citizen) NEW YORK. July 3—Cin- cinnati Reds dropped a full game hehind the Brooklyn Dodgers in the fight for Na- tional League leadership yes- terday when the St. -Louis Cardinals defeated them in a night contest last night at St. Louis. Paul Derringer was the los- ing pitcher. He gave up 13 safe blows to the Cards. Final score was 4 to 0. Bruins and five Pirate errors ac- counted for the 10 to 0 victory. Those pesky Boston Bees stung the New York Giants yesterday with a 5 to 3 win over their old rivals. Three of Boston’s runs came in the sixth inning on two homers by Chet Ross -and Gene Moore. Detroit Tigers polished off the Chicago White Sox yesterday with an eleven-hit attack that netted at least one run in every inning but the second. Final score was 10 to 9. Sox scored a lone marker in the ninth in- ning and had the tying run on base when the game ended. Vic- tory pushed the Tigers into first place as the Cleveland Indians lost to the St. Louis Browns. Brownies pulled the Tribe out of first place in the junior circuit with a5 to 3 win yesterday. Pitcher Vernon Kennedy won his own game with a home run in the last inning, scoring two runs and breaking a tie. Two other Brown hitters connected for the circuit. Boston Red Sox and Philadel- phia Athletics split a twin-bill yesterday—the A’s taking the curtain-raiser, 4 to 3, behind top hurling and a nine-hit attack, @nd the Bosox capturing the sec- ond fracas, which developed into a slugfest. Jimmy Foxx con- nected for his 18th homer of the year to help his team pile up 14 hits and a 15 to 9 victory. New York Yankees spanked the Washington Senators, 6 to 2. The Nats committed another batch of five errors, duplicating Monday’s sloppy play. Lefty Go- mez returned to competition with a nine-hit performance.
