TUESDAY, JULY 2,.1946 ‘DODGERS ‘WIN, ‘REDLEGS ‘LOSE; RACE ‘TIGHTENS BROOKLYN BEATS PHILLIES: CARDINALS DOWN CINCY: BUCK NEWSOM WINS LITH STRAIGHT GAME (Special to The Citizen) NEW YORK, July 2—Brook- lyn Dodgers defeated the Phila- delphia Phillies yesterday and the Cincinnati Redlegs dropped a game to the St. Louis Cardin- als. Result: The National League lead is all tied up in a _ knot again, with the Reds only a bare one percentage point out in front. Dodgers spurted out in front with a three-run lead in the first inning in their game with the Phils, and collected what proved to be the winning run in rather a sluggish game in the fourth frame. Final score: 4 to 3 Cards squeezed out a 3 to 2 win over the Cincy Reds. Enps Slaughter accounted for all Red- bird runs with two four-baggers. Lon Warneke gave up only seyen hafe blows and was aided by bril- liant fielding on the part of Ernie Koy. Pittsburgh Pirates took the measure of the Chicago Cubs with a 4 to 3 victory, the final run coming across the platter in the tenth inning when Relief Pitcher Claude Passeau walked Pinch- Hitter Paul Waner with the bases loaded. Vince DiMaggio’s home run in the ninth inning tied the score up for the Bucs. New York Giants kept right up with the senior circuit leaders with a 7 to ! knockout over the Boston Bees. Cliff Melton ra- tioned out only six hits to the Bees. Three Giants hit homers: Danning, Ott and Cuccinello. In the American League, the Chicago, White Sox fell before the Detroit Tigers and Buck New- som, as the star pitcher of the Detroit team accounted for his eleventh-straight win of the sea- son. Score was 3 to 1. Chisox errors and walks given by John Rigney proved costly. .Philadelphia Athletics .knocked out-a decisive victory <over~ the slipping Boston Red Sox yester- day, final score being 9 to 1. Pot- ter held the Sox to eight hits the while his teammates were collect- ing 15 safeties off two Sox hurl- ers. Frank Hayes, with two cir- cuit clouts and a double and sin- gle, and Al Rubeling, with a dou- ble and two singles, had a perfect day at bat. ie New York Yankees opened up their home-run barrage yester- day on the Washington Senators and ;therebv. -won the game, 8 to 4. Red Ruffing won his seventh game of the season. Joe DiMag- gio and George Selkirk were the homer run blasters. St. Louis and Cleveland played a night game.
