KEY WEST, FLORIDA, FRIDAY, JUNE 28, 1940 Willkie Head ee * Western Senator Expect- ed To Accept Presidential Post; Will- kie Interviewed Vice- (By Associated Press) PHILADELPHIA, June 28.— The Republican convention was expected Charles~L. McNary, of Oregon. fo nominate Senator today as the running mate for Wendell Willkie, presidential nominee who gained the honor late last night on the sixth bal- lot. Previous desire to retire en- tirely from politics was counter- manded this morning when delegation of convention mem- bers called on _Senator .McNary seeking his acceptance of the vice-presidential post after all other presidential nominees had turned down the offer. McNary stated that he would accept if drafted, and the convention was expected to do just that when it convened following the noon re- cess today. McNary is an_ outstanding Western member of Congress, and it is believed he will make an excellent running-mate for Willkie, who hails from the East. Willkie sat before members of the press this morning and dis- cussed briefly his campaign. He stated that it wouldn't be pos- sible to balance the budget at once, but that a definite move would be made in that direction if he was elected. He approved of the Hatch Act, he said, and promised that no brain trust would be called in to run the government if he is successful in the campaign. Drawing lines for the main points of his campaign speeches to start shortly, Willkie gave three cardinal points to be head- lined: 1. National Unity. 2. Build- ing of an adequate defense. 3. Rehabilitation of-the national economy. Willkie expressed a desire that no large contributions would be given to support his candidacy. FRIPP LEAVES ON VACATION W. T.
