WEDNESDAY, JUNE 26, 1940 INDIANS BOOST LEAD; DEFEAT YANKS, 5 T0 3 DETROIT AND BOSTON DI- VIDE TWIN BILL: PITTS- BURGH WINS OVER PHIL- LIES; THREE NIGHT GAMES (Special to The Citizen) NEW YORK, June 26.—Cleve- land Indians boosted their lead in the American League yesterday with a five-inning, 5 to 3 win over the New York Yankees, while Boston and Detroit were splitting a doubleheader. The Indians’ victory Was engineered chiefly by Hal Trosky, who hit his sixteenth and seventeenth home runs of the season and a round-tripper by Roy Weatherly, both of whom knocked in all five runs of the shortened caused by rain. Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox split their doubleheader yes- terday when the Bosox took the first game, 11 to 7, on fifteen hits, and the Tigers took the sec- ong, 5 to 1, on four-hit pitching by Harold Newhouser. The Sox nipped a Detroit rally in the ninth inning of the first game after four runs had crossed the plate. June 26.— Chicago Cubs pushed across five runs in the thirteenth in- ning cf their game with the Brooklyn Dodgers last night to win the contest. 8 to 3. The loss dropped the Dodgers two fuil cames behind the Reds. In the American League, the Washington Senators edged out the Chicago White Sox in a game under lights, 7 to 6. The Nats collected 15 safeties off thres Sox pitch- ers. In the other night fracas, St. Louis Browns downed the Philadelphia Athletics, 12 to 10. The Browns used four moundsmen in their efforts to check the A’s and Connie Mack sent three of his hurl- ers to the hill against the victors. circuit were played at night.
