One of the’ most frequently put ques- tions is whether Key West is linked by air ‘with Havana and the north. Majority of those asking the question are surprised | when informed there is no such _ service. | This Gemand with the increased naval ac- | tivity in Key West may result in the es- tablishment of such a service—we hope. From Havana comes news that Key West may soon become a stop of..*a pro- posed service bctween New York*and Ha- vana. In the May issue of P. A: R. (Pan- American Review) published in Havana > appears this significant statement: . S. civil aeronautic authority | grants the petition of National ' (such action is not unlikely) Havana will | seon be the southern terminus of a direct | air line from New York. . .That through traffic would include stops at Key West, | Tampa, Augusta, Winston-Salem and | Washington. . .That fast land planes being | used instead of ponderous seaplanes, the | hop from Key West (which would regain | the airfield it lost to Miami some years | ago) to Havana would take less time than | now needed for transportation between | Dinner Key ard Eastern Airlines at Hialeah. . .That there would be connec- tions with the P. & O. steamship lines, Florida Motor Lines and railways every- where. . .” ; The fact that an important airlines company is seeking te establish a service in which Key West is included would seem to demand some local action looking to the establishmert of an airport close to Key West. For some months certain of our public and civic officials have been dally- ing with the proposal to locate an airbase | on one of the nearby keys, but so far no | tangible action seems to have been de- | veloped. J The Citizen believes this proposal | should be given a little more attention. Naval activities are being speeded up in Key West. A new naval seaplane base is being constructed on Trumbo island sec- tion. In the meantime there is consider- able discussion of new army land plane bases in Southern Florida. The Miami air- port is being developed along this line. An airport within 10 or 12 miles of downtown Key West would give the army a strategic jumping off point for Guantanamo Bay, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the Panama Canal Zone. Airport action seems imperative. WHAT’S WRONG IN TALLAHASSEE? Continued inaction on the part of the Internal Improvement Board at~ Talla- caused much dissatisfaction among those who bid on Murphy tax cer- tificates at sales held in January and Feb- ruery. The situation has caused much concern to County Clerks throughout the State, too, so much so that the news re- leased yesterday was to the effect that they are now considering drastic action in the matter. Following a meeting held in Talla- hassee, the clerks were told not to adver- tise end hold any more sales of lands now | held by the I. I. Board, under terms of the | Murphy Act. It was generally understood that sales to be certified by the Board had | piled up to such an extent that more time | was necessary in which to clear the decks | for a continuance of sales. Sinee then, however, nothing has | been heard from the Board, both in this of owners are awaiting receipt of deeds to their property bid for successfully, and in most of the other 66 counties of the state. What has com-| caused the delay in proper functioning un- known | der the terms of the Act, is not | here. Taking recogrition of the state of af- fairs, the Clerks’ Association is now con- sidering withdrawing from all coopera- tion with the I. I. Board. They may even cancel all past endeavors by demanding that the whole matter be taken up by the Board as of June 9, 1939, leaving full re- sponsibility to that agency for settlement cf sales so far and continuance oe sales in the future. The clerks feel, and rightfully so, | that they are on a spot. Bidders are jook- | ing to them for a satisfactory conclusion ; It is not their fault that bid- | to the sales.
