An “intercepted” letter to Governor Cone ir. a Miami paper tells the governor that the people of the keys are wondering when they will get the bridges he promised them just before election. It unfor- tuaate that the letter was intercepted and s9 did not reach Florida’s chief executive, otherwise he might be doing something about them. Not for a moment would we think the governor made the promise as a bait to get votes for the senatorship for which he angled unsuccessfully. is President Roosevelt has told many of his political friends and leaders that he would prefer not to succeed himself as President. The question remains open as to whether the endorsements of Roosevelt in the national primaries are a command for him to beeome the Democratic standard-bearer. Whether he consents or declines his personal power will not change. That means that he will be able to pick the nominee of the Demoeratie na- tional convention and that his choice will be nominated. That also means that the New Deal will carry on. ey West Citizen . tire | LABOR BOARD NEEDED HERE News advices to The Citizen from Washington indicate the Federal civil serv- ice commission is preparing to establish a Key West labor employment board “in recognition of the permanent status of the Key West Navel Ai thougk sor e arc m; 1 by the term “naval taticn”, they all point to the necessity for the establishment here of a labor board fer the employment of civilian clerks and mechanics for the naval station and the r base. a4 Key West residents desiring employ- ment at the naval station were under some disadvantage because of the present method of seeking work through the naval ecmmandant at Charleston. In many cases ey West workers were given temporary pointments as laborers, clerks and me- the naval station while their ap- I were being considered at Charieston. Later their jobs were filled il se -e employes re- ited in other secti of the country. With approximately 129 civilians now at work at the naval station here, it is re- ported from Washington that the number is expected to increase. There is pos-! ibility the number may be doubled short- . while the total may be higher in the event this country is drawn into direct con- lict with one cf the powers now at war in E Certainly the fall of the Nether- lands may have far-reaching effect in this hemisphere because our navy may become involved in the protection of the Dutch West Indies at the approach of the Panama Canal Zone. There are many Key West citizens capable of filling majority of the jobs that will be created by reason of the naval ex- | pansion program in this area. For the | most part they are idle or engaged in re- | lief work, so that their employment at the naval station or air base will at once re- duce the relief lead. The Citizen hopes there is no delay in setting up a Key West labor employment | board here ard that its establishment will | lead to greater employment of our | employed. hy permanent un- THE RED CROSS CALLS ' Announcement has been made of a | mecting soon to be called by local Red | Cross chairman, Charles Taylor, to dis- | cover means to raise Key West’s quota in | the emergency relief drive now inaugurated | nationwide. | The quota—$600—is very low, and } | should be subscribed in a short time. And urgency for a quick fulfillment of the ob- ligation is present when the need across the water appears to be so great. The Red Cr is possibly the worthiest of all chari- ties, and its work in the war-torn areas of Europe call for full co-operation on the part of all of us. : The Citizen is sure that Key Westers | will generously respord to the call when it is issued. Key West will be found among those cities of the nation who will have filled their quotas quickly. The goal is y of attainment, especially so when the need is so readily recognized. HITLER—WORLD MENACE Since Hitler came to power in Ger- many in 1933 he has made many speeches | in which he has expressed a fervent de- sire for peace, and disclaimed any inten- tion of molesting his neighbors. ; On February 10, 1933, Hitler said: “The first and best point of the (German) government's program is that we won’t lie and we won't swindle.” The following May 17 he said: “The German people have no thought of invading any coun- try. At Berlin on May 21, 1935, he de- clared: “Germany has concluded a non- , aggression pact with Poland, and she will adhere te it unconditionally. Germany neither intends Hor wishes to interfere in | the internal. affairs of Austria, to ~annex | Austria, or to coneltide an anschluss.” On May 1, 1938, Hitler said: “The Sudetenland is the last territorial claim I | have to make in Europe.” Many other | utterances of the same tenor might be quoted. Yet Hitler invaded and annexed Aus- | tria, seized Czechoslovakia, and annexed Memel without resistance; then started a second World War by invading Poland, which was speedily crushed.
