With three councilmen not voting or veting in the negative, city council Thursday night passed on first reading an crdinance setting up adequate zoning reg- ulations for Key West. Last fall the first official act of the new administration was to select a zoning board to study and submit an or- dinance for courcilmanic action. After ‘some months of study, the zoning board submitted the present tertative ordinance. Two weeks ago city council ordered a pub- ic hearing to be held the night of May 9. n jector appeared, so city council assage of the act. MOTHER'S DAY Mother’s Day will be observed by millions of Americans and it is right that some special notice should be taken of the day set aside to honor the Mothers of the nation. It should be borne in mind, however, | | that the observance of a day, once a year, , does not constitute the most appropriate or an exclusive method of honoring mother- hood in general or mothers in particular. There are men and women who nat- urally revere motherhood; they do not need a special day. They are worried, for example, by the sad plight of unfortunate methers who suffer unnecessarily in connec- | tion with birth and care of their children. | Certainly, we recommend the ob- servance of Mother’s Day but we also ad- vise that suppert be given to agencies set up to assist mothers throughout the nation. It is all right to praise motherhood but the best way to show praise is to make it pos- sible for all mothers to raise their children in a satisfactory manner. “Mother” will be the subject of ser- mons in most churches of Key West to- mcrrow, even as it will be throughout the nation. It is fitting -that she be honored in this manner, and The | Citizen subscribes to the belief that pews will be filled with grateful hearts when they listen to the many eulogies that are sure to be presented. Likewise, Key West has “Mother” on days preceding her day to- morrow. School children yesterday a brought remembrances home from classes. | Dadtlies, too, made many purchases in local stores during the week, for the mothers of their children. The book which -he wrote sheds little or no light upon his own life and Hab- akkuk is not referred to in any other writing in the Old Testa- men. It is probable that-he lived :about 600 B.C., during dark and janxious days in the life of the Kingdom cf Judah. The good King Josiah had died about nine years before and his evil succes- sors, probably Jehoiakim, had completely wiped out all of his _ reforms. The prophet witnessed the downfall of pure religion and in its place a return to idolatry. -In- justice, tyranny, oppression, bloodshed, sensuality and un- Tighteousness wete breaking up. the nation. The Kingdom of Ju- dah had fallen into the hands of jthe proud and cruel Chaldeans. These dark days filled the prophet of God with foreboding. It seemed to him that God had forgotten Israel because if he really meant to make of Israel a great nation, as he had promised Abraham, why did he permit a ‘tyrant ‘How could a pure and righteous Sunday School Lesson heathen nation, such as the Chal- ceans, to conquer it? With his heart filled with doubt, Habekkuk did not sulk, but took his questioning to God and then proceeded to wait for God’s answer. And, God answer- ed. First, he said, “For, lo, I raise up the Chaldeans, that. bit- ter and hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the . Jand, to possess the dwelling places that are not theirs”, Then God describes the fierce enemy which would conquer Judah. Habakkuk listened to God and became even more perplexed. How long would God allow this to oppress his people? God look down upon these sin- ful men without destroying them? In due time, however, the an- swer came and Habakkuk was commanded to write it down in order that “he may run that read- eth it”. The answer was in seven short words: “The just shall live by his faith”. We mortals are so prone to doubt the justice of God because, apparently, the wicked prosper while those who try to live right and dd.right are often- times put to it to live at all. We think of the span of our lives here on earth as the ultimate, forgetting that our stay on this ™ earth is only a brief period be- fore we enter our eternal exist- ence.
