Reporter and Argus The Citizen presents herewith another in the sceries--entitied, “Nat twojes”, trem the pen of J. C. Galteway. Sts These’ articies appear regularly in the Port Allegany ‘(Penna.) Reporter and Argus, and ‘were comp: during Mr, and Mrs. Galloway's visit in the city re- cently. Foilowing is the latest article: “This little tree that is like a spreading shrub, branching from the ground and twisting every way > famous Lignum- vitae. Dainty je pinnate leaves, al- most fern-like and thin and shin- ing; and many-winged dull ora buttons that split like bit- ter-sweet or whaoo and show five crimson-covered seeds inside; it is a lovely thing. In striking con- trast are the Tropical Almonds whose thick leaves are wedge- shaped and clustered in shining green rosettes toward the end of the branches, with scarlet and crirhson ones:‘kehind them. Look under the tree; the ‘grourid is covered with the almond-shaped nuts, thick-shelled with a slender, edible kernel. Perhaps you may find some fresh ones; the hull mingled colors: green, yellow, purple, scarlet, maroon, or black. It is fibrous, end you may taste it if you like. “And all over the town are the cork trees; hibiscus trees with green and black buttons all over “hem and now coming out with pink ard white flowers like long rosebuds, but really crinkled hol- lyhocks with shining green hearts all around them. Another hibis- cus tree is the Cuban Bast whose full-sized hollyhocks are _buff- yellow the first day, changing to maroon later. Real trees these: the shrubby kinds are another story. There is an acacia along the streets with ‘yellow plush cords of bloom, and_ curiously contorted pods. that. open and dangle blsck seeds-on golden rib- bons. Its leaves are sickle-shap- ed, jalike on both sides; not true} leaves though but. phyllodia serv- ing ‘the same purpose. Parkin- sonia has sprays of yellow blos- soms kissed with red, and leaves like embroidery’ stitching; while | covéring many vacant lots is the lovély Opoponax, ‘locally called Popinac, Mr. Kirke: tells us; a large shrub with foliage like the | daintie:t and tiniest of ferns, now coming into bloom with fluffy little balls of soft,.yellow silk with a rich exotic fragrance. It must be entrancing on a warm, soft moonlight night when in full flower. { “We should show you the grand old tamarinds, broad and dark and heavy with their fern-like leaves and clusters of finger-like russet pods; but now that you an introduction to a few of the most conspicuous trees, you are ready to wander by your- selves on trips of tree adventure For you will not want to miss the tall columns of Peruvian cactus, the odd cactus-like trees of euphorbia, the gigantic clumps of pand-fAut; the breadfruit trees, the gapodillas, and the novelties that jwill keep you asking ques- tions‘all alongthe way. The crotons in hedges and clumps and banked againt the house walis are yellow and orange, green and pink, scarlet and m:roon, the ar- alias columns of green moss, or ivory and green; there are roses, and red bail of malvaviscus. . . and. ...and. ... ven us a love “And n the vines! Sheets and fiames of course of bougain- villaeas luminous purple or ‘rich crimson; Chalice vines th:t climb to the high roofs and stain scores of inverted goblets with the drip of purple wine; Mexican fiame vines; not the one you know, but ablaze with orange and red daisies; other vines with yellow lace of tiny peas; soft lavender- blue trumpets of Thunbergia; cainty white morning glories, and pink clusters of Pandora vines— what with climbers and shrubs and flowering trees and new things coming into bloom every week, and little cottage yards looking like a display in a metro- politan flower show, one runs out of space and breath trying to tell you of the flowers here. And then some Key Wester comes along and remarks cesually, ‘Oh, but you should be here in March (or in May) when everything is in bloom.
