HURSDAY, JANUARY 25, 1940 Key West W Game From ins Close Ponce Squad A real thriller of a basketball | ame was played Jast night when the Key West High School Conchs ; opened the home season against Fonce De Leon High School five before a packed house of rooters. Closing minutes of the game had the galleries in a whirl, with the result never definite. until the final whistle—the Conchs just edging out the Coral Gableites, 3 to a Bangs of Ponce drew first bload | of the game, with a free throw, followed by a fast basket score. | Robert Smith, of the locals, seor- ed first for his team in what proved to be the only score for; the Conchs in the first quarter. | At the half, however, both clubs} were tied at 11 apiece. The roofed brick corridor con- necting the tower and the gal- leries (left open during construc- tion) was to have been com- pleted, to afford secure passage for the defenders. The only access to the interior | of the completed structure was to! have been over the rampart: and across a drawbridge entering the tower at the second floor level. Stairways were to have been, built from the ground level of the upper tiers of the casemate bat- tery: Enémy forces attacking from the land side would have been exposed to musket fire from the! defenders on the rampart and gunfire from the top of the tower. Should they overcome the fire of the defenders and scale the ram- part, they could only gain access to the interior of the enclosure by dropping down from the gallery roof, when they would come un- der musket fire from the galleries and the tower, gunfire from the flank defense howitzers, and grenades and other materials thrown from the top of the tower. The towers were apparently named after a Spanish military engineer who constructed similar works on the ‘island of Corsica, his name having come to be as- sociated with outworks to a main fortification. (A number of round | towers in Europe, constructed in prehistoric times, are also called Martello Towers, the Spanish engineer's name having presum-| ably been applied to them also.) | The towers at Key West, how- ever, differ from Martello’s gen- eral plan in that their design) combined seacoast defense of the outwork itself and land defense! of a principal fortification. The towers here are believed to unique in military architecture. jin tH 0 iN THOMPSON and REALLY BULLET-PROOF ‘brod thinks he has something really good in the way of a bul- }let-proof. vest—and he backs up his confidence in a big way.
