TUESDAY, JANUARY 23, 1940 Lions Basketeers Defeat "“"_. Army; Grills Win 62-32 Key West Lions Club kept up their winning ways last evening in a league contest with the Army five, whom they defeated 49 to 28. Lions were held prac- tically even in the first-half, but put on steam in the third and the final stanzas to outscore the Army lads almost two to one, providing the winning margin. Knowles, of the Lions, was high-scorer of the evening, with twenty-two points. Ethridge of the Army was high scorer for his club. In the first game, the DeMo- lays, newcomers to .the league, proved easy for the veteran Sea Food Grillers—the latter winning 62 to 32. Four players on the Grill squad were practically tied for high scoring honors, totalling up from 14 to 17 points apiece. Island City Sports Writer Tomorrow night at the High! School Gymnasium the local Varsity five will meet its first} upstate opponent in the third cage game of the Conch schedule. Conchs’ opponents for tomor- row night will be Ponce de Leon cagers from Ponce High in Coral | Gables. This basketball quintet} gave the local five its first de-! feat of the season on the upstat-/ ers’ own court last week. } Coach Offutt and the Varsity members are looking for revenge in this game and an interesting contest should be the result of this determination. A regular Island City League game will be played as a fore- runner to this contest, teams to be announced in this column to- morrow. GOLFING NEWS By CLUB REPORTER With one of the best fields of the season entered the blind bogie tournament Sunday at the Country Club wound up in a two-way tie for first place. Mrs. Robert Colt of the Casa Marina and Dr. Avery of Key West tied for first prize with 79 being the lucky number. Four players tied -for second spot. They were L. V. Saks, Mel- vin Russell, Robert Colt, Casa Ma- rina, and W. J. Donald, Casa Ma- rina. Curry Harris had the low gross for the day, scoring a 42-38 for an even 80. This was excellent golf considering the heavy winds. Joe Lopez, local amateur star, and his partner, Gilmore Parks, everied the score with Robert Spottswood and Pro Eddie Bush when they took the second of their Sunday matches. The Spottswood-Bush duo took the first a week ago. The match was played on a two points a hole ba- sis and the winning margin for the local players was one point. The winners played well and the victory was not assured until the final putt had been holed. With the two teams deadlocked at one win each the final and deciding match will be played this Sun- day. Results of the Blind Bogie: Mrs. Robert Colt, 104-25—79; Dr. Avery, 97-18—79; L. V. Saks, ‘87-8—77; Melvin Russell, 87-10— 7%; Robert Colt, 92-15—77; W. J. Donald, 102-25—77; J. E.
