TUESDAY, JANUARY 16, 1940 OBSERVATIONS FROM THE BLEACHERS By OSCAR L. MILIAN DID YOU KNOW THAT— Every player participating in the Monroe County Baseball League, with the exception of Ar- mando Fernandez, Ralph Arnold, Blue Sox, and Idilio Salinero, Amado: Hernandez, Pirates, knocked in one or more runs for their respective clubs during the 1939: summer and mid-winter schedule? ARMANDO FERNANDEZ Blue Sox infielder, hit for ex- tra bases five times of the six safeties credited him during the first and second halves of the spht schedules. JOHN OFFUTT AND JOHN NAVARRO Knocked the only home hit by league players. runs ARMANDO ACEVEDO AND JOHN NAVARRO Combined, committed more er- rors at shertstop than any five players in the loop. AMADO HERNANDEZ Pirate first baseman, received more on balis than any other player taking part in league games. DICK NAVARRO Was the jinx of the Conchs and could have defeated Hamlin’s crew nine times out of every 10 games played. RAY BUSH Was the only man acting in the capacity of manager who was successful in improving the Pi- rate baseball club. PIRATES’ CREW With its gallant leader, played Santa Claus Christmas Day and presented Umpire Sevilla with a basket of assorted food. FRANK CARABALLO, EARL ADAMS AND ROY HAMLIN Split a $15 gate in a_ benefit contest, between Sevilla and Jackie Carbonell, injured during games. TROJAN PITCHER Nick-named “Dickey”, was the only player who failed to get an extra e hit in the second-half split schedule. IZZY RODRIGUEZ Committed more errors behind the plate tham the three other catchers in the loop combined. WILLIAM CATES Assisted greatly in bringing the Trojans from the cellar to the top and later pennant winners in the second-half. AMBROSE NAVARRO Will give out a carload of sil- ver palms should the Trojans win the city championship by defeating the Conchs in their post series play-off. PUBLIO CARBONELL AND ALBERT ACEVEDO Were easily the most valuable pla s for the Pirates’ aggrega- tion. IDILIO SALINERO Held the Conchs to nine well- scattered hits in 18 innings of play. FIDEL LOPEZ Was an improved infielder un- der the managerial reign of Ray Bush. RENE MACHIN Switched around to every team except the Blue Sox. BLUE SOx FRANK JOHNSON, JR., Department in Miami.
