At the | time the city made a bid for the proposed naval seaplane base, a project that went ‘to Jacksonville some 500 miles from the | Straits of Florida, a congressional com- | mittee labeled Key West “the second line of defense.” It is a fact that for more than 100 | years Key West has been the first line of | defense. Key West was first established | when the navy sought to drive pirates out | of Caribbean waters. Now the navy is back, this time as result of the emergency arising from the European situation. In short, every time the national de- fense becomes a major problem, the Key West Naval Station becomes an im- portant base of naval operations. Every navy man, every military authority knows the reason—Key West is the strategic point from which to control the entrances to the Gulf of Mexico. The Straits of Flor- ida entrance is our front door. Yucatan Channel entrance is a hop skip and jump away for, seaplanes and destroyers. Now that the navy is here again, Key West is happy again. Key West knows | the economic value of naval operations. Every destroyer every month has a pay- roll of approximately $7,000. Much of this money is spent here by the men and by the navy for supplies and _ services. There are eight destroyers on duty here | now. Eight times $7,000 is a payroll of $56,000 a month for the destroyers alone. | Then censider the payroll for the seaplane | tender Lapwing, the seaplane personnel, the larger force at the naval station and the increased list of civil service employes. West. | Knowing the value of the navy to the city, Key West will not profiteer at the ex- pense of the navy. Prices will be no dif- cept as they are affected by national and international marketing conditions. The navy men here know and appreciate this fact. That»makes for a happy situation all around.
