V. Kirsch, well-known hunter of Palmer, Alaska, owes his life to the flashlight gripped in his hand when the~ water pulled him ander. Kirsch and his party were on a hunting trip and Kirsch had bag- | ged a giant moose only a few hours before. It was dusk when they be- gan packing it back to camp, each bearing about 150 pounds of meat on his back. By the time they reached Willow Creek, famous in Alaska for its fine trout, it was pitch black, The water in the stream was breast deep and rushing by so fast it rolled up white, billows on the surface. Though they knew it was risky under such conditions, they had to cross. Hoping that the weight of the meat on their backs ‘would keep them from being swept off their feet, they pushed out cau- tiously into the foaming water. Kirsch had gone only a short distance when the water reached his chest and lashed furiously at the heavy pack he carried. He knew then that he could never make it. Turning, he tried to fight his way | back to the shore. But it was too , late. The rushing torrent threw him ; down, and the heavy pack dragged | him to the bottom. “I landed on my hands and V. Kirsch, knees,” Kirsch said, “with my rifle still in one hand and my flashlight | in the other. I struggled frantically to get on my feet. The heavy pack was on top of me, though, and the weight of that rushing water push- ed me down and knocked me against the rocks jutting out around me. “The water pounded in my ears, and I thought my lungs would burst. | No matter how hard I struggled, I couldn’t budge. I thought I was done for then!” Fortunately for Kirsch, however, his party missed him almost as soon as he went under. They be- gan groping blindly in the black swirling stream. “If it hadn’t been for that flash- light in my hand,” Kirsch declared, “they never would have found me in time. I had fresh batteries in it, and the beam was strong enough to make a bright spot on the water ; above me. One of the packers spot- ted that. Wading to the light, he | reached down, found my pack ropes, and dragged me out. A few more minutes down there and I never | would have eaten any of that moose meat!” The moose he killed, Kirsch said, was the largest ever taken in the Willow Creek section, where large moose are numerous. The dressed meat alone weighed 982 pounds, and the antlers had a spread of sixty. six and three-quarter inches. THE WEATHER Key West, Fla., Oct. 11, 1939. Observation taken at 7:30 a. m. 75th Mer.
