Should Europe destroy every vestige of its civilization’ there would remain our glorious country, Canada and the Latin nations south of us. As a slogan to prevent war it is all right, as a probable fact it is all wrong. Government scientists say that a hunk of raw-beef applied to a “shiner” is the} bunk, and that if some one supplied the | beefsteak to eat it, and apply a cold com-| press to the eye. The advice issued as a result of the investigation made has cost the taxpayers a nice piece of change. | Over the country in the past two years 76 daily papers have folded up with re- sultant unemployment. Higher wages, in- | creasing taxes, (particularly social security and unemployment taxes) have been the chief causes for the suspensions. There was a time when the increasing costs of is- suing a newspaper. could be passed on to the readers and advertisers, but there is a | limit: to everything. Congress. has | THE KEY WEST CITIZEN BEACH PLANS ADVANCE It was good news to citizens and to ; our business and hotel interests to learn that progress is being made with the plans for a temporary beach to serve the | public and tourists until the main muni- | cipal beach is finished. One of the city’s greatest drawbacks last season was the lack of adequate bath- ing beach. By adequate is meant a beach that is clean, well-policed and managed in the best interests of Key West and her guests. There are beaches here, probably always have been beaches here, but they were not well kept and in condition to ap- peal to visitors accustomed to clean sand and regulations prohibiting rowdyism, ball playing and the distasteful advances strutting romeos,, Bathers like peace, com- fort and cleanliness. The Key West civic plan is to utilize the beach at the foot of Duval Street which, it is understood, will be made avail- able at virtually no cost. It is hoped to in- clude a stretch of beach toward Simonton Street, but sponsors of the project seem to feel the rental demanded by the property owner there is too high. However, this It is hoped to have the beach ready for use | oy Nov. 1, right at the start of the tourist | season. | Corstruction of the proposed muni- | cipal beach along Roosevelt Boulevard for | a distance of 1,300 feet above Bertha | Street isa large job. Preparation of plans, approval of the plans, raising of a sponsor- | tails will take some time and wave with the assistance of man-made jet- ties and other works to hold the sand on the rocky shore. In all probability it will be around two years before that beach is ready. So the temporary beach at Duval Street is important. It should have the loyal and liber] support of everyone in- terested in the development of Key West as a tourist center. It will not take a large sum to do the job, but the resulting bene- fits will loom large in the city’s economic welfare. This is one project that should | not be pushed around or crushed by pea- ; nut politicians. There has been enough buck-passing and lukewarm, handling of) vital municipal improvements. WHERE DOES DEFENSE BEGIN? Walsh, of Massa- chusetts, urges the slogan, “No. war, ex- cept in defense of our country, our free- dom and democratic institutions.” Mr. Walsh is chairman of the Senate Naval Affairs Committee. He insists that Senator David I. | all we want is to “protect our freedom and our democratic institutions for _our own children.” Well, so we do, but this doesn’t tell us exactly what the Senator means by his generalized slogan, which will be prompt- ly approved by every American, including those who would like to see an American Hitler and the demolition of the demo- cracies of the world. The point to be understood, in all this talk about defending our country, is where does the defense begin. It is pos- sible for other nations to cripple the eco- nomic life of the United States and reduce the standard of living of every American home wihout firing a gun against an Am- erican fortress or warship and without landing a man on the soil of the Western Hemisphere. THE PUZZLING BRAIN The human brain is a remarkable structure, according to physiologists, who ought to know what they are talking | about. There are some people (many of whom you undoubtedly know) whose acts: indicate an entire lack of brains.
