GREETINGS, MR.CANNON! «| i Our Congressional Representative,, A. | | Patrick Cannon, more familiarly known as | Congressman Pat Cannon, has been a busy | man the last few months. He has been up at | Washington representing the Fourth Flor-.' ida Congressional District. He is vacation- ing now. the hard way. He is visiting his | constituents to give an accounting of him- | self and to find out what his district thinks | ‘about things. That is why he is scheduled | to he in Key West today. © Congressman Pat Cannon seems to have acquited himself very well at Wash- ington. He was smart, enough to realize that\the newcomer in Congress is given lit- tle opportunity to touch off any oratorical pyrotechnics. Pat Cannon wisely refrain- ed from talking too much on the floor of the House. He preferred the more effec- tive if less spectacular way of boring from within the committees td which he was as- signed. The people of Monroe county seem to like Pat Cannon. Because they like him, they are going to dump.a lot of their trou- bles in his ample lap. The way of the man who can get things done is hard in Key West. He’ll have to work harder than ever before to make up for the neglect that has pushed Key West down into the eco- nomic dunips. Our people will want to know about the future of the naval station, the subma- rine base, the low-rental housing program, the intracoastal waterway, the water line to the mainland, extension of Overseas highway, the possibilities for an auxiliary naval air base, the sponge propagation THE KEY WEST CITIZEN A and roulades were marked for rests when Josephine Antoine, pretty Metropolitan Opera shopping for sailing apparel in the popular sports shop of Lord and Taylor, New York’s large department store, In spite of @ full summer of out-of-door opera ces and concert recitals, Antoine will find time for her second love, sailing. PROGRESS ON KEYS Private investors have spent approxi- mately $237,000 in development of their properties on Florida keys between Lower Matecumbe and Big Pine Key since the start or work on improvement of Overseas Highway, says a writer in the- Miami News. When the Overseas Highway is com- pleted on the old railroad bed and via-. ducts and when fresh water is piped across the keys to Key West, it is believed a great deal more money will be spent in additional private improvement. According to the writer, the present developers of the keys do not expect com- pletion of the program before 1944. or 1945, but they are acquiring land and water rights for extensive developments as soon as they see the projects well to- ‘ward completion. : One man is said’to stand ready to spend about $300,000 in a real estate de- velopment at Marathon. The list of build- ing permits for Marathon, as detailed in the article, is impressive, indicating that much building is under way.—St. Augus- tine Record. TAKE A HOME VACATION Vacations spent at home may do more good than a rush trip to some resort. It is a common occurrence for holiday seekers to return from their annual vaca- tion wearier than when they left their ‘homes. The rush and turmoil of many crowded vacation schedules will not do a worker as much good. as the same amount of time spent loafing and idling around the home. ; Especially is this true if the tired business.man has-to take with him fi- nancial worries and perplexities about the money to pay the bills. Somehow, most of us in Key West have the idea that a vacation cannot be a.vacation without a trip away from home.
