It is not probable that Postmaster General Farley will go to bat for the presi- dent for the third time. The division of engineers, United States Army, has réported tiifavor- West intracoastal canal. It is held by the engineers that the sufficient to warrant the cost and that the néw Overseas Highway and the steamship sense. Entirely overlooked in the feport of the engitiéers, so far as Key Weésters have beén informed, was the neéd for a deeper watefway for yachts and small éraft of all kids. What is actually sought by the Chamber of Commerce is a five-foot chan- nel from Bahia Horida to Key West. This depth is regarded as sufficient for yachts Atlantic and the Straits, The fact that the intracoastal canal extends only as far as Bahia Honda has of Key West as a haven for small yachts- men.’ Untold numbers of yachts do hot come to Key West now because they are forced at Bahia Honda to take the outer channel. Relatively few of the pleasure craft annually coming to Florida waters follow the ship lanes. They prefer the in- | tracoastal waterway, with its quiet waters, its matchless scenery and its unquestioned safety. Many léss worthy projects have been approved and undertaken with approval of the United States Army Engineers. Florida” congressiotial delegation favors extetision of the canal to Key West. Con- gress directed the army engineers to sur- | véy the project and make a report. Why did the engineers approve extension of the canal from Miami.to Bahia Honda? Why did the work stop at that point? It is éx- actly in the middle of nowhere. It would | cost no more a mile to extend the canal | from Bahia Honda to Key West than it did from Miami to Bahia Honda. Extension ofthe canal to Key West is a vital project in this city’s improvement program. The Chamber of Commerce should appeal from the decision of the division engineers a8 quickly as possible. Apparently the division engineers are laboring under the impression that Key West wants an eight-foot channel to this city,as originally requested. The matter should be untangled at once. A five-foot canal is regarded as sufficient: Let’s get it. ACCIDENTS CAUSE 94,000 DEATHS Every year the National Safety Coun- cil issues a statistical year-book, Accident Facts, which tells the story of losses caused by accidents in the United States. In 1938, there were 94,000 deaths, 8,- 900,000 injury casés arid “direct costs” of $3,300,000,000—tthe toll of accidents in twelve months. The death toll in 1938 was eleven per cent below the figures for 1937, with .a major portion of thé decline attr utable to fewer fatalities from motor vehicle ac- cidents. It is also interesting to see that the ac- cident death rate for children continues to decline, thus following the trend since 1929. This is probably the result of ef- fective accident-prevention work and; also in patt, to increased alertness on the part of children who are becoming aware of the dangers that confront. them. STATES AND TRADE BARRIERS Trade barriers between thé States, it is reported, are diminishing. This is a good sign. The prospetity of the people of thé United Statés has béen attributed, in a large degree, to the free- dom of commercial intercoursé that has featured the growth of the nation. “While the nation has adopted a high tatiff policy to ihterferé with trade be- tween it and OtHef nations it has advocated a free trade policy within its bounds. That such a record may be inconsistent does not appear to be 4 handicap to its operation. ues Sas | Key West has péen dealt andther ably on the Chamber of Commerce’s re- ; quest for improvement of the Miami-Key | commercial use of the canal would not be | and fishing boats.
