They have prepared plans for rehabilitat- ing the beach at Coral Isle and utilizing the old casino for a bathhouse. They hope to obtain a lease of the property for five years, so that it may be available to the local and the traveling public until other agencies provide a permanent miinicipal beach. This is a laudable program, worthy of the Jaycees and erititling them to the thanks of the entire community. In connection: with the beach project as \now being worked out by the-Jaycees it is to°be hoped*that the recreation de= partmént will be able to supply the-beach between .Simonton and Duval stréets, as well as Rest Beach, with benches and tables. It is. reported the beriches at: the beaches were removed some time ago for other purposés and havé- not been re- turned. At present there are only one or two benches at either of the two beaches. These are important fixtures for a beach. There is no place for tourists and our local residents to rest where the coolest breezes caressing the city usually are to be found. What is vitally needed in Key West, The Citizen believes, is a permanent beach committee’ or commission. Such a body can be charged with the duty of checking: actfvities at the public beaches and of making recommendations for im- provement as they develop. Competent men to serve on such a commission can be found among the hotel, roominghouse, apartment and restaurant operators of the city. These men are vitally interested in creating fadilities here for the entertainment and amusement of |- visitors and willingly would serve on any commission set upto push such a program. 3t seems to The Citizen that the business interests most vitally concerned with the development of the tourist trade should organize to protect their interests ' and thus bring large benefits to the éntire city. STAMPS TO HONOR AMERICANS Authors, artists, poets, educators, in- ventors, composérs and scientists will be honored by the issuance of a special series of postage stamps that will carry the like+ néss of thirty-fivé Americans, sélécted by polls of philatellic societies and from ad- vice recéived from educational, business and patriotic organizations. It is interesting to note that one of the stamps will show the likeness of Booker T. Washington, notéd Negro educator, who founded a great college for his race itt Alabama. The other thirty-four will in- élade thirty-one men and three women: Here is the list of Americans to be honored by the stamps: Authors: Ralph Waldo BErterson, Samuel L. Clemens, Washington. Irving, Louisa: May Alcott and Jamés Fenimore Cooper. Poets: Henry W. Longfellow, James Whitcomb Riley, Walt Whitman, John Greenleaf Whittier and James — Russell Lowell. . : Educators: Horace Mann, ~ Charles W. Elliot, Booker T. Washington, Fratices E. Almost anybody, reading the above list, will realize that it includes ‘notable names and that it omits others who should be equally honored.
