RELATES FACTS ABOUT FLORIDA Mrs. Jean Machette of Miami, who left for Kansas over a year ago after her husband's ., health had been benefited at Hot Springs, writes as follows to Rev. A.. L. Maureau, S.J.: “We are having very hot wea- ther here; it has been way over the hundred mark all week, and ho way‘to cool off, although the nights are a little’ cooler. The trouble ‘with Kansas is that you freeze all winter, and the terrible heat all summer there does not See ee. medium. It sure taught me to appreciate Flor- ida climate. Key West is suffering growing pains. There are those who will grow with her and there are her enemies who will sink into dust and be forgotten. A city detined| to take her place in the sun, cnly needing a highway contact to! start her careér—that’s Key West: There are those who love her, who have spent their lives in her interest and. those whoeare newly won to her heart and who see her needs and they will join hands, the ‘old and. the, new, for her future. . ..Then,. there. are the “do-nothings” who offer only | criticism,.who tear, dgwn.. and| destroy, . who's, suspicious aroused at every forward, new undertaking, every bit of pro- gress made. Those who fancy some one in some mysterious manner has “an ax to grind” or is going to make some money out of every proposed improvement. What if they do. If the city grows, every‘one will make more money. But, that is beside the question. There are noble, un- selfish men and. women who feel a civic pride in their city as one feels in one’s family. There are those who are interested in the development of Key West into a larger, better city and in bring- ing more population, more cult- ture and more wealth to Key West. Then our people can pros- per and have better jobs and be less, dependant. on government charity. Let us consider criticism: There is honest, constructive cri- ticism and. there is criticism biased and destructive—ignorant, wanton criticism, -_hypoeritical criticism from those who chatter and blabber about things they know nothing about. Construc- tive criticism is lending a helping hand. Giving something strong for something weak. It gives erf- couragement—ideas for improve- ment—and causes one to feel the touch of brotherhood. Key West will thrive and grow—so get on the band wagon and ride in on her glory and. be a part of the growth for’ this proud beauty will wear her crown and take her } place in the sun. are) COURAGE: One meets so much nobility in every day life. The courage of a mother of four children, little ones dependant on her. She is a widow, but only a! girl in years. This young mother has the prospect of one month’s work, and then. Her voice breaks | as she tells you, but there is no} bitterness—just hope and cour- age. ree ON DUVAL, STREET: The Vining Harris home, Agoking sad and neglected. Notify Photo fair What the Well Dressed Bathing Beauty Will Wear. | Cr 1S increasingly: difficult each season to achieve originality in | bathing uit ensembles. As swim suits approach the vanishing point, the designers find themselves re- stricted in the material available. it is not enough that the bathing suits be fashionable and chic. They must above a!l be so desigued as to assure the greatest possible freedom of mo- tion for the arms and legs, and stay put despite the most violent exer- cise. The bathing beauty contests this. ; season promise to he riots of color. The designers on both sides of the Atlantic are using arresting color schemes in the futuristic spirit. The same general effect will be carried out in beach capes. 2 A striking novelty of the season 1s the waterproof swim suit. It is made of material which will shed water and appear fresh and un- eee on amurning from the surf, One advartage claimed for the new suit is that the swimmer can don a wrap without soiling it, or can tie on the beach after bathiag without fear of catching cold. Still another. novelty is the swim suit’ made en- tirely of crepe paper, which lends itself to fanciful effects but disin- tegrates rapidly on contact with the water. The swim, suits illustrated here show: what the well dressed bathing. beauty will, wear this season on European beaches. ‘The suits. dis played at the Leipzig Fair are the newest creations.
