Anouncement of the formation of the | corporation and the general purposes of | the organization are contained in letters | sent to several hundred citizens of; Key | West. The primary objectives appear to be ; a balanced municipal budget, establish- | ment of an equitable system of taxation, | collection of alf the taxes due the city un- der such a fair system of taxation and strict enforcement of the laws of the city. With these objectives attained, Citi- zens & Taxpayers, Inc., believes that the | city.would be in financial position to pro- | vide an adequate water supply and sewer | system, public beaches and bathing fagili- ties and better street pavements and to | sponsor such WPA projects as would give the city some sound improvements. These are all worthy objectives. less the city’s budget is balanced, unless taxes are properly levied and collected | and unless the municipal laws are enforced strictly and impartially, Key West is never | going to be on a firm financial footing. As conditions are now trending here, Key West is headed for bankruptcy, according to Citizens & Taxpayers, Inc.—and ac- | cording to every other straight-thinking group. And what outside financial inter- est wants to invest in a community headed for the financial junk heap? ; Citizens. & Taxpayers, Inc., rightfully believes that the way to bring about an im- provement in the conduct of municipal af- fairs is by the election of men qualified to run the city on a business basis, without fear or favor, for the benefit of all, not a few, of our citizens. Principal objection of some of our native residents no doubt will be the fact the incorporators of Citizens & Taxpayers, Inc., are newcomers to Key West. The in- corporators are Col. L. C. Brinton, Guy Carleton, H. P. Connable, B. P. Winter and Henry Brewer. They are newcomers here, but it must not be forgotten they deserve more credit for wanting to be good citizens of this community and to make this a bei- ter community than those who stand around and talk and do nothing. These men have invested their money here and, being citizens, have a right to want to pro- tect their investments against . wasteful practices. The Citizen valioian in the sincerity of these men and their program, insofar as it has been revealed. Further revela- tions are scheduled to be released by the corporation from time to time. They will be closely watched and studied by those of our citizens who feel that a change in municipal affairs would be better than no change. ARGENTINE’S “UNITED STATES” SCHOOLS 2 In most of the Latin-American coun- tries, some form of celebration is expected on United States’ Independence Day. Re- cently, in reading a news story from Bue- nos Aires, Argentina,.we were surprised to -learn that one of the.graded-schaols bears the name “United States of America School” and that one of these schools exists in the capital of almost every Latin Ame- rigan Republic, just as others bear the names of other American Republics. The interesting. point about these | schools is that the children attending them are given special instruction about the United States, its history, traditions, its great men and its place in world affairs. Each school room is named after a famous American, whose picture hangs. on the wall. The same program is followed in the other schools that bear the names of other republics, In this way, some of the children become familiar with ideals, history and folklore of the other republics in this pleted, We looked upon it as a cornucopia | hemisphere. that would pour weath into our laps, in- It sems to us that these schools ‘con- stead we are realizing that a pendulum | stitute an important point of contact for swings both to and fro—it gives and takes, | the development of cultural relations be- and while it gave us something, it is taking | tween the countries in North and South more from us, but let us not hecome dis- America.
