This is true, but first get yourself a diet. You can’t imagine what is the matter with the world until you listen to the side- walk sdlons give their views. The individual who settles all prob- lems ,on the basis of his, or her, personal experience settles no problems. That Missouri schoolboy who was WELCOME, NATIONAL GUARD! Approximately 400 young men, and officers of the 265th Coast Artillery, Flor- ida National Guard, are encamped at Fort Taylor for their annual field training service, . They have left the comforts of their homes, their jobs and their businesses and*|~ are sweating ‘in tents and huts, working from early morning until night and soak- ‘ing up large gobs of practical experience | in handling the coast defense elements concealed within the drab, battlements of Fort Taylor. "As outlined by their commanding of- ficers, the men of the regiment are being trained to take the field on short notice under the. national “protective mobiliza- tion plan” and to fit themselves to conduct |- continuous operations against an enemy equipped with modern means of action. With virtually no time reserved for ex- traneous activities, the guardsmen will learn how to fire effectively the 155 mm. artillery pieces and the anti-aircraft ar- tillery. The importance of these military ac- tivities cannot be minimized. In the event <6f some national emergency the country must, find meh’ immediately to function un- der the defense plan. The only source of “supply are the’men whe volunteer to serve | the nation in peace time. The’ National Guard is probably the most important source of trained manpower for immediate field sevice. The men who leave their civiliah pursuits in time of peace to prepare themselves for-war deserve the plaudits of the nation. Key Westers would be in an exposed position in the event of war on this hemis- phere. They appreciate the value of, the need of an adequate coast defense system. They know that it takes trained men to operate the military machine now only nominally manned by the regular army detachment here... They realize that the guardsmen are being trained for a service that’ will be important to the civilian pop- ‘ulation in case’ of war. Key West; therefore, hails the mem- bers of the Florida National Guard now ‘encamped here. The young men are cer- tain to find a:warm welcome:in Key West. The city hopes they go through their train- ing paces without untoward happenings and that they, have a good time in their unscheduled .moments, GHOST WRITERS The employment of “ghost: writers” by statesmen and others to write speeches fer them is a very ancient custom, accord- ing to gigs ewreg of Arizona, who himself is one of the greatest of contem- porary orators. 3 He said it seemed well established that Nero, the Roman emperor, delivered speeches writtes by his prime minister, Seneca, and that Julius Caesar had a ghost writer named Hirtivs, Ashurst quoted Senator Vandenberg as authority for the statement that Alexander Hamil- ton wrote all but for lines of George Wash- ington’s famous Farewell Address, never absent or tardy in 12 years seems too * regular to ever amount to much. The Johnson Act prevents us from making fools of us again by turning the other cheek to the debtor nations. The world might be better if people would practice their own religion more and try less to force it on other peoples. Most Ferum corre- . spondents, unfortunately, don’t have time cos acon. weed be ane : The ghost writers have often caused their clients much embarrassment by: crib- bing from the writings of: others, The most tragic instance of the.sort is told of Speaker John White of the Twenty-Fifth Congress, who employed a writer to pre- pare his farewell speech to the House. It seems, Ashurst said, that the writer | copied extensively from the farewell ad- ‘dress. of Vice-President Aaron Burr, de- livered before the Senate in 1805. When the source of the language used was dis- ‘covered, White was “so overcome with mortification and disgust that. he com- mitted suicide.” Whieh is a warning that if a states- man must have a ghost writer he should be careful to select one that won't let him down, Once this writer was told by a man who had just refused a loan to a friend: “] kept a friénd today and made $25 be- sides.” That might-apply to nations as well especially Latin American countries who would eagerly accept loans and just as eagerly delay their payment, Our little sister, Cuba, for instance, owes big Tid Samuel more than $3,000,000 with interest -that owing to the passing years has itself -grown into an appreciable sum, of money.
