Comprehensive City Plan (Zoning). Hotels and Apartments. Bathing Pavilion. Airports—Land and Sea. Consolidation of County and City In jealousy there is more love of self than of somebody else. Women don’t like each other? Then men are the reason for it. Not all the dead advertisers are in the cemetery; some are still struggling to keep going. Many an able man is ready to serve his community if the people will do what he tells them to do. Senator Ward took no chances; he passed the buck to the people ‘and that entails no responsibility. One of the remarkable revelations in life is the number of excuses a woman can find for not doing what she doesn’t want to do. If you think Key West is the best place for you in which to live, you might instigate some improvements. Others are doing it, why not you? When two or three young wives get together, while their husbands are at- tending a lodge meeting, the ears of the latter are more than apt to burn. When a disease attacks a community, the people are filled with consternation, but little thought is given to automobile accidents which kill thousands of Amer- feans every year. There are many anti-chartists who are sincerely opposed to the new charter be- cause they have been misled by propa- gandists. They will change their attitude when they become acquainted with the facts, - Prom the press room window of the Florida exhibit at the World’s Fair, ‘one can reach out and pick cocoanuts off a cocoanut paim tree. That’s better than can be done from most Florida press rooms. : ' Wonder if movie couples ever cele- brate their golden ‘wedding, but that’s ex- pecting too much;-upon second thought we'll compromise on silver weddings. Arthur Sawyer Post No. 28, Amer- ican Legion, after years of struggle in the: face of disheartening conditions, is begin- | ning to take a more active part in Key | West’s community life. | At present the veterans are working | on plans for entertaining the eighth dis- | trict conference of the Department of | Florida, American Legion, to be held here | July 29-30; for bringing the state con- | vention to Key West in 1941, the post hav- | the other. able of arranging the annual state conven- visitors. conventions is a suitable-convention hall or at least some capacious meeting place. Thus it comes about that the Key West. vention Hall. and clubs should follow the lead of the | Junior Chamber of Commerce in backing | the American Legion movement for a Con- | vention Hall. here has emerged from the shell of com- munity inactivity. Arthur Sawyer post | has done a good job of handling the in- | dividual problems of its own members. | The organization here is rapidly expand- | i ing Nn size and importance. It is not a | political organization, for political activi- ties are against the policy of the American Legion. It has no selfish commercial or pecuniary aims. . Arthur Sawyer Post has the power to beconie a moving, compelling | force in Key West’s community life. The Citizen hopes it grasps this opportunity to lead the way in restoring Key West to her rightful place among the leading and pro- gressive cities of Florida. LET’S KEEP THE PRIMARY Readers of The Citizen, most of them men and women of average intelligence and influence in life, should strenuously re- sist the efforts of conservative politicians and thinkers to kill the primary system. We are not concerned with its effect, at this time, upon the quality of our. govern- ment or its contribution to the so-called “chaos” of our. r_parties. The direct primary places political power in the hands of men and women | everywhere and prevents corrupt control by party groups and a few favored citi- zens. The primary gives to the election not only the.right to accept or reject the organization choice of candidates, ‘but the. more valuable right of naming the party candidates. We have no false illusion as to the people’s ability to make serious errors in primaries and elections, or the ease with which professional politicians often mis- lead them. However, the remedy is in greater popular education, not in restrict- ing the power of the average voter to ef- fect prompt political changes in personnel and administrations. DESERVING A PRIZE The sponsors of the New York ‘World’s Fair invited foreign nations -to participate by erecting buildings and pre- senting exhibits. So far, we presume, right. Now, it so happens that the Soviet government has constructed a building that is, we hear, higher than any other building at the fair. This, to some patriots, is an insult. To super-patriots it indicates that the sponsors ofthe fair have a tendency to- ward the form of Socialism eras in Russia! The gentleman who makes the absurd statement was speaking to a group on the subject, “Keeping Your Mind American.” We suppose he has a companion address on “Keeping Your Mind ae it ought to ‘oe good! this was all ing started too late this spring to land the | 1940 gathering, and for providing the city \ “with an adequate Convention Hall: - | Each of these activities dovetails with | By showing their capacity to | handle the eighth district conference, | which will bring between 200 and 300 per- | sons to the city for two days, the Key West | Legionnaires hope to convince their for- | mer comrades-at-arms that they are cap- | |county has been only $6 except; }for the small amount jhave been set out, add so much | jto the beauty of jent people of the county.
