PAGE FOUR Garden Club Held Meeting Of Season Final Monday (By Nifia Leslie Calleja) The June meeting of the Key West Garden Club was held on Monday evening at the Public Library on Duval street. This meeting was the final one of the season, pending continuance in October. Mrs. J. D. MacMullen, presi- dent of the club, opened the meeting at 8 o’clock. Due to the absence of Mrs. Philip Cosgrove, recording secretary, the previous meeting were not read. Mrs. W. J. Phelan, treas- urer, read the financial report, and Mrs. William White, cor- responding secretary, reported that she had written several let- ters pertaining to club affairs. Mrs. MacMullen announced that plans were being formulated for a project concerning the Key West Botanical Gardens. She then asked for suggestions from members regarding next year’s meeting, what subjects the club would ‘like to study, etc. Mrs. Wallace Bryant Kirke spoke of a report made by Mr. Gill, who addressed the Garden Club last month on the subject of fertilizing local soil. Members who have followed his sugges- tions have had splendid results. Mr. Gill’s report should prove very valuable and helpful, and mimeographed copies are to be made which will be available to all club members. Mrs. E. J. Bayly announced that Mrs. B. Curry Moreno had arranged the flowers on display at the meeting, which consisted of the Frangipanni, the Horse- tadish tree blossoms and the Alamanda. Mrs. Harvey Eagan, Mrs, William White and Mr. Leuthi read papers regarding these flowers, and there followed | an informal discussion » about them. Mrs. Bayly spoke of the need for Bird Conservation in Key West. It had been suggested that the public school children make bird houses, and it appears that a local Audubon Society will be formed in the near future. | Two distinguished guests were | minutes of! |Dahlberg, superintendent of the famous Fairchild Gardens in Mi- jami, and William Lyman Phil- lips, landscape architect, who has.done such notable work in Grinnells Park and Matson Ham- mock. Mr. Phillips spoke very briefly of plans for a_ beautiful flower and tree lined highway extending over the Keys. The subject of Dr. Dahlberg’s very interesting and instructive address was “Landscape Gar- dening.” He mentioned several famous European gardens that have been models of beauty and perfection for hundreds of years. He pointed out that the “theme” of any garden is important, and that unity, proportion and - both physical and psychological balance, as applied to gardening, must be considered. Simplicity is necessary,: as is sincerity. Sequence should.be strived for, likewise harmony, and vista. Dr. Dahlberg pointed out some of the most common faults in gar- dens: lack of plan, helter-skelter plants. ence. During this period he men- tioned that Key West was the States where breadfruit trees would grow, and suggested that we show many of them grow- ing here. Dr. Dahlberg at Monday’s meet- ing, and the entire club looks for- ward to having him with us again next season.
