TUESDAY, MAY 23, 1939 CARDS AND REDS: SETTING FAST PACE IN LEAGUE RACE ROOKIE PITCHER COOPER DE- FEATED PHILS FOR CARDS, AND TIMELY HITTING WON FOR REDS OVER DODGERS (Special to The Citizen) NEW YORK. May 23.—St. Louis Cardinals, for whom most baseball experts predicted a sec- t ond division berth, continues to set the pace in the National League. Rookie pitcher Cooper turned in a victory against Phil- adelphia Phillies ‘yesterday aft- ernoon to kdep the Redbirds on top of the hepp. For ¢ight innings he set the Phils Bibs with eight hits, but in the ninth two men got on base with ndne out‘and, he gave way to Davis, who retired the side without allowing a hit. — In hot pursuit of the Gashouse Gang are Cincinnati Reds. hung up their seventh straight victory. Although Brooklyn Dodgers got as many hits as the Reds, the Ciccy boys batted the old pill when it meant runs, and therefore won the game, 6 to 3. Camilli, of the Dodgers, poled his seventh homer of the season. Lou Fette, starter on the hill for Boston Bees, and Big Bill Lee, opening pitcher for Chicago Cubs, failed to go the route yes- terday. These twirlers are rank- ed as the ade of their respective club. Each team annexed the, same number of safe blows, but the Bees produced five runs to the Bruins’ three.
