M ‘Duncan, General Manager of the Overseas Road and Toll Bridge District, who, in an interview |with The Citizen this morning, {pointed out the necessity for all order that the cause of fresh wa- ‘ter for Key West be not harmed in any way. | About Appropriation It is known that the amount of appropriations by PWA for the whole nation is $500,000,000. Of that amount, $6,- 000,000 has been alloted to Flor- ida, and this amount ‘represents , but twenty percenit.of the total of $30,000,000 on thé approved list for this state. ‘Whether or not the Florida, Keys Aqueduct Com- mission obtains their appropria- tion of almost two million dol- lars from this comparatively small total appropriation for this state depends, it appears, on strict ,cooperation between all agencies interested in the project. The Special Bill, now in’ the |hands of Representative B. C Papy for passage at the session of the Legislature, authorizes the Bridge Commission to allot funds from expected grants from the Federal Government to aid the Aqueduct Commission in funding their operatinos. The move was made, as explained by Mr. Dun- can and Attorney Paul Marks, to augment the work of the fresh water group. The project of en gineering this amendment to the | original Bridge Commission grant by the state, has been under con- sideration for some time, and all |interests, including Representa- tive Papy. who is reported to be in favor of the move, were cog- of all developments. Concerning Grant The Bridge Commission” has never obtained any grant on their original loan from the Fed- eral government of $3,600,000, and the present effort to obtain the grant for uses as outlined above, will not effect the status | of the loan, according to Mr. Dun- ‘can. It is thought, that if a | grant on the original loan is ob- tained, an additional grant may jbe released for the construction of not only the aqueduct but be used to stand part of the ex- |pense of extending the highway from Big Pine Key to Key West. | John Costar, vice-chairman of | the Bridge Commission, is quoted jas being “in favor of the bill”. He expressed surprise that con- troversy arose over the question, \it being his understanding that jall interests knew of the move- |ment that has been under way for some weeks. total | nigant Linterests working .in-harmeny: iné ~»
