Legion Plans Three Parades In Connection With Efforts To Secure State SILSOTIOOS ‘FOUR CANADIANS SAY | Proposed Activities To Be Staged On Tuesday, Wednesday And Thurs- day Exenings Climaxing their drive for com- munity support in the effort to bring the 1940 state convention of The American Legion to Key West, members of Arthur Saw-' yer Post, No. 28 will make three public appearances this week in parades headed by the Hospitality band in pirate uniforms. Tuesday evening the Legion- naires will parade from Legion hall to the Chamber of merce office in Fleming street, Wednesday evening they will go from the Legion hall to County courthouse, and Thursday ning march to City hall. In appearing before the Cham- ber, the Monroe county commis- sioners and the city councilmen on the three nights in question, the Convention Committee of Arthur Sawyer Post will ask for suitable formal invitations to the delegates at the Fort Lauderdale convention of the Legion next week asking them to vote for Key West when consideration of next year’s meeting comes up. The committee will also ask for financial support of the cem- munity effort to land next year’s Legion convention. Arthur Saw- yer..Post. will. sgnd..a.delegation to the Fort Lauderdale conven- tion, will pay the expenses of the Hospitality band and arrange for suitable floats to appear in the parades there as part of the promotion work. “We are making some progress in our effort to raise funds for defraying the pre-convention ex- penses, but we need additional support if we are to make a suc- cess of the campaign”, was the comment today of Fred J. Dion, chairman of the finance division of the Legion’s Convention Com- mittee. The convention fund goal is $500. The Key West-Havana Cigar company has given Arthur Sawyer post 1,000 cigars for dis- trobution to the Legionnaires at the Fort Lauderdale convention, and E. W. Berriman, principal stockholder of the company, has agreed to cover any deficit in the campaign fund up to $100. “A littlie more of that high type of co-operation and we'll land the 1940 Legion convention and put Key West in the fore- front of Florida cities bidding for such gatherings.” Al Mills, general chairman of the Conven- tion Committee, said. “Orlando and St. Petersburg also are seek- ing to have the 1940 state con- vention of the Legion, so Key West must go to bat in a big way to land it.” All war veterans of all wars, Boy and Girl Scouts and other patriotic and civic. organizations have been invited to parade with Arthur Sawyer Post Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday eve- nings. God knows Miami ‘is so modern that sane people flee from it in haste, and a great many will be trekking down to the Keys I believe. I got a tremendous amount of in- terested reaction to that column about your ‘old gal’ city awaiting there in her bustle and feel in my own smali way to have stirred up & lot of potential trips down yonder. “As to the oversights, and I re- gret them and shall make a bet- ter survey on my next visit, the fact that I got there at night and had to hustle away for the base- ball camps early next day, kept me from Going as good a descrip- tion as you deserve.
