SATURDAY, MARCH 25, 1939 ROY FULFORD GREAT BASEBALL | PLAYER OF OLD QUIT PLAYING AFTER HE * PITCHED WHAT HE CON- SIDERED HIS MASTERPIECE PERFORMANCE By PEDRO AGUILAR Roy Fulford, who died the lat- ter part of this week after a short illness, was for many years the star pitcher of Key West. He was active during the days of Fico Garcia, Arthur Fulford, F. Milord, Jcse Machin and other pitchers, all great moundsmen. Roy played most of his games with the Regals. He was also a member of other Key West nines at different times. He had the distinction of whitewashing the best baseball club of the Navy in 1914. U.S.S. Nebraska players were cham- pions of the Fleet when they came here that year, when trou- ble was brewing in Mexico, U.S.S. Georgia, Washington, ! and North Carolina were other battleships in port at. that. time. All the baseball teams of the visiting ships competed with local teams, but no Key West nine semed to be able to defeat the Navy’s champions. Fulford was not pitching at the time but was coaxed to toe the slab once more with an all-star club that was formed to play the USS. Nebraska nine. He came out that day and won 1 to 0. Others on the all-star club were A. Pent (Panther), Felo and Evaristo ivodrgiuez, Larney Stickney, Tomas, Modina, J. Mira (Cheche) and Abbie Roberts. Fans at that game will never forget the performance by Roy. He considered this his master- piece and did not pitch any more after that game. | In respect for his memory, no! games will be played tomorrow by local teams. | A great ball player of old Key West, this Roy Fulford.
