Both the Key West golfers ex- pressed themselves as being “fit and ready” for the meet, and con- fident that they will qualify. They were reluctant to hazard a guess as to the final standing of the playoff, other than to state they ae to fight hard for Key BOATING CLUB CLUB MEMBER FIGHTS © SHARK ON FLAT GROUP ENJOYS WONDERFUL BAY BOTTOM FISHING: | GOOD CRUISING THROUGH} ISLAND CHANNELS |who started the Reporting excellent fishing and wonderful cruising, a group from the Key West Boat Club returned cruise | the Bay last night aftr a 40-mile through the Keys of side, beginning at dawn, in tiny skiff and outboard motors. Highlight of the trip was chas- ing sharks and giant over the flats on the bay side of West Harbor Key. One nurse shark was chased for about a half hour, cach time being scared off by the approaching boat. Finally, the boat was nosed right on top of him, and Harold Williams,! owner of the Key West Tropical Reptile Institute, and noted alli- gator and shark wrestler, leaped on him with a knife, while the beat was expertly shot to one to avoid running him down. utting one arm _ completely around the brown colored shark, Williams reached for his knife} but with a terrific wrench the shark roared out of his grasp be- f@fe the knife could be brought into play. Examination revealed the skin on Williams’ arm had _ been scatched as badly as if sandpa- per had been run over it from the friction against the shark’s skin. Stingrays were chasd but with no harpoons the hatchet used to spear them was ineffective. The rays weighed about a 100 pounds each. Feeding on the flat also were fish believed to be either permit or jack, but easily alarm- ed by the approaching boat. Through the five or six 25-foot deep channels running between a quarter and a half-mile long through the center of the man- grove and hammock islands, the group went, Herons, ducks, marsh birds, great whites burst from the thickets on all sides in thes little frequented Keys. Man- grove roots in weird shapes rimmed the channels and along the banks swam hundreds of mangrove snapper and angelfish. Stopping off in the bay side of the Harbor Key Channel, ap- stingrays cluding two three-pound group- er, yellowtail and grunts were hauled in with bites coming as! fast as the lines hit the bottom. Jewfish Channel, Channel and many others among the larger channels ap- proaching well in Keys and providing excellent protected anchorages were noted on this side. Homeward bound, the boats went over the flats to approach the deeper inside wa- terway with the tide of three) ‘ thing.” feet at flood allowing passage. ‘Villareal walked, | Vidal. ; with Puby and Bethel crossing ‘and the game was over.
