We have compulsory educa- tion. We have the radio and the various beneficient organiza- tions that have for their purpose |the dissemination of knowledge | of various kinds. |@ But we are an ungrateful peo- |ple as a class. We have but lit- tle appreciation of the good |things we have enjoyed. The ; more we get the more we want, |and the more dissatisfied we be- come. | Among the various human de- | fects, ingratitude is doubtless the | worst. Conversely, gratitude— jvereciation of the good things that come to us—is absolutely | essential to give one mental bal- | ance. | If you haven’t the intelligence | to be thankful for the good things \of life, then automatically you | are not able to acquire the know- | ledge essential to secure a repe- | tition of such favors. | Being thankful for beautiful | weather, for the glowing sun- light, does not necessarily add to the number of sunny days. Such procedure simply ; lessens demand and_ increases unemployment. And in the end ; those who secure the high wages ; cannot buy as much with their | wages as they could during the | low-wage period. Many of us are minus the in- | telligence tod realize that wages | must be measured in purchasing | power and not by dollars and ‘cents. It is how much you can ja standard of living. In a recent investigation ; was found that a factory worker in the United States can buy four times as much food and clothing with one hour of work as a Ger- ‘man worker, nine times as much, as an Italian worker, and nearly twelve times as much as a Rus- sian worker. And yet we find many of our workers advocating foreign isms whereby regimen- tation of workers in some in- stances is not unlike slavery. And absolutely the only excuse for such false conclusions is the lack of intelligence. I can only repeat— Intelligence!!| For God’s sake, | difficulties. of a similar nature. ; ‘buy with wages that determines |, it}} GROUP ARRIVED (Continued from Page One) jties being brought to their {notice. It was after this careful sur-| vey and the many explanations | made by the committee that two} of the visitors made the remark} that “they were ver¥ niuch sur- prised to find that} "practically ;everything which “had been ‘stated with’ reference to Key West had been Sddly misrepre- |sented”. Their attitude was such {as to indicate they were sold on the idea of Key West as an auxiliary base, at least. Enjoy Lunch After having been given a com- plete and intimate view of the facilities of Key West, and an ex- planation of the different places in the harbor, the water depth and all things in connection therewith, the committee mem- { } light lunch was enjoyed and at 4 o’clock the visiting committee- men left for Miami where at 10:50 they were to start on the \return to Washington. It is the opinion of the mem- bers of the local committee, said Mr. Taylor, that Key West is very much in the picture. “We have everything required in the prem- ises, béing the most strategically located, and have for immediate use sufficient properties and at a cost of less than one-fifth of the figures being submitted by other localities bidding for this air base to bring the project up to a major status”. In Miami, stated Mr. Taylor, he had been advised by those who knew that with reference to that city as an air base the chairman of the Miami committee had em- phatically stated to Chairman Vinson that they did not want Data Given Committee Continuing, Mr. Taylor said that ail of the data which had been compiled with reference to | Key West had been sent on with |the committee and that there | was a mass of supplementary in- |formation being compiled to be forwarded to Washington at the earliest moment. | He concluded by saying that | Key Westers should be “up and doing, working for that which our nation is justly entitled to and quick action on the part of our nepresentatives will make this Point the Gibraltar of America”. Finally, he said, “We have just ; begun our work on this project jand whenever a meeting is called jfor the purpose of discussing the project, turn aside all other call- | ings and assist the committee in this fight”. | | OVERSEAS TRANSPORTATION CO., INC.
