A halt can only be called; if at all, when the public wills it. And unless the public wills it, the country faces national bank- ruptcy. That is the plain unvarnished truth! : The magnificent Gothic Cathedral] in _Milan, Italy, begun in the year 1868, ac- cording to legend can never be completed. ~The memory of that sublime construction wil] ever remain indelibly impressed on the minds of those privileged to behold it. An ounce of housing protection is worth more than a pound of health and police protection. The THE GAS TAX MARCHES ON The thirty million motorists in the United States paid gasoline taxes to the amount of nearly one billion dollars dur- ing the past twelve months, according to the American Petroleum Industry’s Com- mittee. This is about four times the gasoline tax paid by the motorists in 1927. How- ever, with some exceptions, the receipts from the gasoline’ tax have -beén used to improve highways. Undoubtedly, the na- | tion’s roads are much better today than they were in 1927. This means economy to those who operate automobiles. There are some who believe that the savings to motorists in operating and maintenance costs off-set the tax collected. So far as we can determine, there is no use to agitate for any appreciable re- duction in the tax on gasoline. With con- stant demand for better and bigger high- ways, there will be millions of dollars to be spent on roads every year. This will take money and the average legislator will continue to think that the bulk of the funds should come from a gasoline tax. HIGH AND LOW POINTS The highest and lowest points in the United States are located within eighty- six miles of each other. This same paper calculates that in all foreign countries combined. there are 28,000,000 Italians in race and blood and that if they should be “re- patriated” the population of Italy would become 72,000,000. Whether such an idea s seriously considered by the Italian government and wonder resided have | is another matter, but Mussolini on one occasion announced: “If Italy wants to count for something, it must appear on the threshold of the sec- think of themselves as Italians. The peninsula is one “with its too ; many mountains and its soil which cannot nourish so many.” If its popu- lation were to be considerably ‘in- creased, there might really be “explosion.” - We may dismiss the idea of large scale repatriation. But what about the pressures already there? Many disquieting rumors are being circu- La about meonaaie strain and pub- ic discontent. There are three possi- ble lines of relief, short of an explo- sion, One is to Jessen the pare by a lower birth rate. This is not feasible because public and especi gov- ernment opinion is so ly against,.it, pt would be a very slow method of reducing numbers. A ‘second method of relief is emi- gration from italy. Here, again, there is no probability that anything will be done. Restrictions on e: tion are numerous, the-return of Italians living abroad is encouraged, and other countries have ‘no desire at Pfseent to receive immigrants on a large scale. The third method is to relieve the tension by a larger development of foreign trade, This means lowering of import restrictions by Italy against foreign products and by other coun- tries against Italian products.
