Bayview Park. | (By Nina Leslie Calleja) ‘The January meeting of the Key West Garden Club and Tree Guild was held Wednesday night, January 4th; at the Woman’s Clubhouse on Division street, and was very well attended by mem- bers and winter visitors. Wallace Bryant Kirke opened the meeting and welcomed Mrs. James MacMullen, new president of the club, presenting her with a charming bouquet of mixed flowers. Mrs. Philip Cosgrove read minutes of the previous meeting, listing the names of new officers of the organization, and men- tioning that plans were being formulated to hold the Flower Show, which the Garden Club sponsors, late in February. There were on exhibit two vases of a large species of local flower, the Calotropis gigantea in white and purple. Mrs. P. D. Holloway gave a brief talk on this flower, telling of its habits and growth. There followed a short piano recital by Mrs. George Wid- meyer, who chose as her selec- tions Percy Grainger’s “Country Gardens” and Joyce Kilmer’s “Trees.” These were very ap- propriate for the occasion, and were very favorably received by Mrs. Widmeyer’s audience, which accorded her a fine ovation. Mrs. Wallace Bryant Kirke then introduced the speaker of the evening, Dr. John C. Gifford, of ‘tWe University of Miami, whose subject was “Tropical Forestry in Tropical Florida.” It has seldom been the writer’s op- ing address than Dr. Gifford’s. Without the use of a single stilted phrase, without any effort to im- press himself upon his hearers, Dr. Gifford launched into as splendid a talk as was ever heard in the Woman’s Clubhouse. It was as though the professor sat down with us for a friendly lit- tle discussion, and indeed it finally developed into just that. He seated himself with the audi- Starmer, Professor W. C.
