Key West lies in that one-third of the earth's surface that never has any snow- fall—and we are glad of it; so are the thousands of tourists.who visit our island city. There are other places that have no snowfall, but let them do their own ad- vertising. The Philippines want freedom, and independence, But they want a preferred position in commerce, and protection by the United States from other nations— | Japan. So we will remain a step-daddy to them after they become wholly inde- pendent on July 4, 1946. If | the right kind of representatives with the | | achievement in taking Jericho, METHODIST CONFERENCE HERE Today Key West is host to approxi- mately 200 delegates to the Miami District Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The clergymen and lay leaders of the District were warmly welcomed in scores of our homes which had _ been thrown open to them for the . period of their stay in the city—and on behalf of the people of. Key West generally, The Citizen extends greetings and salutations. | Getting under way late this after- noon, the Conference is faced with an impressive and. comprehensive program covering every phase of the work corried on by the Methodist Episcopal Church in this district. Ably informed clergymen and lay leaders are scheduled tomorrow morning to discuss such subjects as Brotherhood, Church Extension, Christian Education, Golden Cross, Lay Activities, Missions, Orphanage, Woman’s Missionary Society, and to hear reports by the Ad- mission and Licensing, the Benevolences and Orphanage, the Christian Literature, Christian Education, Missions, nuates and Golden Cross and other com- mittees. One of the most interesting features of the program will be a solemn vesper service to be conducted at 5:15 p. m. to-| morrow:at the tomb of the late Rev. C. E. A. Van Duzer, the first missionary to the Cuban people, who died of yellow fever in | line of duty at the age of 22. In charge of the service will be the Rev. Garfield Evans of the Dania First Methodist Church, who is himself a missionary. That the first missionary to the Cuban people should be entombed in Key West. City | Cemetery is not a mere happenstance. | Key West long has been known as_ the cradle of Cuban independence and it is | fitting that the late Rev. Van Duzer should find his final resting place here. Key West pastor hosts, the Rev. Joe | A. Tolle of First Methodist Church, the | Rey. J. P. Lilly of Fleming Street Methodist Church and the Rev. O. C. Howell of Ley | Memorial Church, and the general com- | mittee headed by Gerald Saunders of Key West, have met every possible: demand of the visiting delegates. They have pro- vided quarters and food and have ar- ranged a tour of the city preceding the vesper service in City Cemetery. This type of arrangements and the hospitable treatment accorded the visitors is bound to react to the benefit of the en- tire city of Key West. Out of such con- ferences are developed firm friendships and a warm appreciation of our city. Key West is glad the conference came here and citizens generally hope that it may soon return. TWO FACTS ABOUT EUROPE Two facts appear to be well estab- lished by the crisis that rocked Europe last week. They are: First, a realization of the close ties | that exist between Italy and Japan andj Germany. This was shown by Mussolini’s | declaration in support of Hitler and by Japanese statements that, if necessary, | Japan would employ military force with these countries to fight communistic opera- tions, 2 The, second fact established is that sentiment.in the United States is almost | conclusivély against Hitler.. Americans | generally assert that, sooner or later, some- | body must call Hitler’s bluff but they are | | Superan- | equally as emphatic in declaring that it should be somebody else. HISTORY REPEATS | The many Bible students of Key | West will tell you the story of how Joshua trumpeted on a ram’s horn and felled the | walls of Jericho. This took place in 1450 B. C. when the armies of Israel crossed the river Jordan and invaded ‘this city in- habited by an idolatrous people called the | Canaanites. After forty years of wander- ing the Israelites. made a miraculous a strong- | hold, and the first possession in the | Promised Land. On Nevember 13, 1938 Jericho again fell but into British army hands this time, after being occupied for two months by Arab rebels. It has been too long for us to calculate the years, but Jericho again falls.
