Many ‘believed that it had gone so far that it endangered Americanism and_ constitutional demo- eracy. Furthermore there was the re- en to the attempted packing of the Supreme Court, to the Reorganization bill, to the periodical radical attacks made on business by President Roosevelt, to the close tie-up between the Administration and the communistic C.1.0,, (Monday President John B. Lewis avowed that all Communists would be run out of the or- ganization) to the universal support given New Deal candidates by the Communist party, to the utter disregard to balance the budget, and to the use of government money to influence votes. Pooh-pooing by the President of the Dies investigating committee, created by Congress to unearth un-American and subversive activities by spies and enemies of our form of govern- ment, did not help either. ATTENTION TO DETAILS Whether a business executive should pay much attention to details or leave all minor matters to subordinates has been the subject of discussion from time to time. The late Harvey S. Firestone, one of the ablest of American executives, once expressed himself on this question, and his views are briefly given in the following | paragraphs. “An executive cannot grandly dismiss details. Business is made up of details and I notice that the chief executive who dis- misses them is quite likely to dismiss his business. “Success is the sum of detail. It might perhaps be pleasing to imagine oneself beyond detail and engaged only in great things, but as I have often observed, if one attends only to great things and lets the little things pass, the great things be- come little; that is, the business shrinks. “It is not possible for an executive to hold himself aloof from anything. No business, no matter what its size, can be called safe until it has been forced to learn economy and rigidly to measure values of men and materials.” TOO LATE “There was a man in our town, And he was wondrous wise, He swore (it was his policy) He would not advertise. But one day he did advertise, And thereby hangs a tale, The “ad” was set in quite small type, And headed ‘Sheriff's Sale’.” —Exchange indi- | _THE KEY WEST CITIZEN | KEY WEST IN | TAAAY'S COMMON | DAYS GONE BY ! | tappeniags Here Just 10 Years|| *hestre”- Ago Today As Taken From = The Files of The Citizen 'TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE Can you answer “seven of these test. questions? SUPERVISOR OF CANSERVA- TION INFORMS COMMIS- SIONERS OF AGRICULTUR- AL DEPARTMENT MIAMI, Nov. 25 (FNS).— “Every incoming tide brings a new supply of fish to Florida’s long shoreline, but it is the state’s responsibility to protect and build up this supply against the de- structive practices of man, the great predator”, R. L. Dowling, supervisor of conservation, told commissioners of agriculture from many states here to attend their national convention. “We have a demand from the 25,000 regularly employed fisher- men to conserve this food wealth and preserve the fishing re- sources for the future”, Dowling said. “These interests will tell you their business is slipping. In the past they were unmindful of this necessary conservation work, : but they are not any longer. We have big fish dealers any one of whom produced 10 to 15 millions} of pounds of fish in past years whose production now is cut to three million pounds annually. These men appreciate and wel-| come the work of the conserva- tion department”, he said. The supervisor of conservation was invited to address the con-/ vention by Nathan Mayo, Florida | commissioner of agriculture. The visitors learned not only of Flor- ida’s important agricultural re- sources, but also of the vast salt water wealth, including fishing, oystering, shrimping and spong- ing, and they were told briefly of | the state’s minerals and the wealth of natural resources that underline this rich peninsular state. Florida’s supply of seafoods is being drained not only by an in-| creasing commerce but also by hundreds of thousands of pleas- ure fishermen who travel from all over the world to spend their leisure months in a state that af- fords the finest fishing. “This. sport fishing is a tremendous as- set”, Dowling said. “Every town| and hamlet in Florida is benefit- | |ted by these millions of dollars the tourist spends while here to go fishing in our salt waters. This annual turn-over is estimated at} more than twice as much in dol- lars and cents as that represent- ed by the commercial fishing in- terests”. The conservation department) has announced that a program of conservation for sports fishing is under way, and the proposal is to protect the supply of fish, pre- vent destructive practices, and regulate the business so as to in-, sure a continued supply and Florida’s tourist attractions will remain in full bloom for all time to come. relieves coLbs| first day, Headaches, and Fever! dine, te Coldn, in 30 |.
