In a democracy the people rule, but too often it is the wrong people. “So many live on the reputation of the reputation they think they have made. The Bible still outsells any book pub- lished, and, if you want to know, it is still being read. Marriage is a partnership, but it often hits the rocks because one member of the team thinks it’s a cinch. Sex education demands the utmost prudence because individual reactions may be unexpected and disastrous. : Neither Communism nor Fascism are | solutions of anything; they are purgatives, | which of necessity cannot last. An educator suggests a course in stock | market buying and selling, but doesn’t tell | where a reliable teacher could be found. : About the only time some of the men- | folk of Key West go to church is at their ewn funerals, This is, perhaps, a bit too | late. The character of the people in a com- | munity is more important than the size of its population, but there are not many | who believe it. i Since the time of Christ peace and ‘good will have been preached, but little progress has been made in this old word ef ours. Luckily, we are a little more in- telligent. | bankers and others in ' build a demonstration home in Key We: FHA DEMONSTRATION HOME State and district officials of the Fed- THE KEY WEST CITIZEN eral Housing’ Administration, in outlining | details of the new FHA better housing | program now under way throughout the realtors, contractors, the Chamber of Commerce Thursday night, announced it is. their intention as quickly as possible i dealers, architects, | nation before a gathering of loeal lumber | When completed by local workmen’ with materials supplied by local dealers, Key West merchants and then will be ‘thrown open to public inspection for one The public is also invited to visit | week. | the home will be completely furnished by the site after it is selected and inspect the I Demonstration Home during its construc- | tion and thus acquaint themselves with the quality of the and workman- ship. materials homes in the low-priced field to meet the Purpose of the Demonstration Home | is to encourage the construction of small , demand for homes so evidently existing | | among those making relatively small -an- Government statistics show | nual incomes. that 80 per cent of the adult population of | the United States earn less than $2,500 | } annually. FHA officials point out that, ob- | viously, these people cannot afford the more expensive homes which are being of- fered the buying public and, for this rea- | son, are suggesting the building of small homes containing maximum requirements of livability and comfort'and offered on | sale to the great mass of potential home owners. The Demonstration Home will be of- fered for sale in accordance with the FHA plan of home financing when it is com- pleted. Under this plan the home can be purchased with a down payment of not less than 10 per cent and the balance will be payable in equal monthly installment payments over a period of 25 years. Monthly payments on-the loan will amount to less than rent and will/include principal, interest, taxes and insurance. The FHA, it is pointed.out; does not lend money—it merely INSURES payment:to the lending agency. Proposal to construet this Demonstra- tion Home in Key West is important news. There are dozens of families here who would undertake to procure such homes under the FHA terms if they weré aware | of the opportunity offered them. The | Demonstration Home inspections are ex- pected to produce a demand for such struc- tures, so that Key West now seems assured. of some new construction activities—and | construction is one of the important steps | in bringing, about a return to prosperity, an objective of the FHA. LABOR SHOULD UNITE The division between the organiza- tions that represent the laboring man in| the councils ‘of the nation can hardly in- | erease the power of the laboring man’s | voice in national affairs. There should be an early end to the differences between the American Federa- tion of Labor and the Committee for In- dustrial Organization. The conclusion of a peace will be beneficial to laborers gen- erally. Naturally, we do not know exactly what terms should constitute the “settle. | ment.” We doubt if the average laboring man knows them. This is a matter for the leaders to decide but it is a part of the re- | sponsibility of that leadership. Fifty-seven blind men went on strike in New Orleans. Most employees who go on strike are blind; they would gain more through arbitration, and at the same time retain the good will of the employers. The virtue of pity distinguishes Chris- tendom from the heathen world. Are the Hitlerites showing any pity for the Jews? No. Therefore the Germans, that is those who are persecuting the helpless Jews, are heathens. During the World War they were called Huns, and it seems that the ac- cusation still applies. So far as we know, none of those new Thomas Jefferson nickels have made their appearance in Key West. Eleven million of these coins have been minted, and many more will be struck off as they are needed. Slot machines, both the gambling and the © merchandise-vending types, have caused the great demand of nickels, of which, the U. S. Mint estimates, about 1,600,000 are in use. The sooner the war between labor factions ends the better it will be for labor, for industry and the country. CHURCHES GAIN STRENGTH It is interesting to report that church membership in this country has attained a new mark, according to The Christian Herald’s annual report of church statis- tics, Statistics prepared by Dr. Herman Carl Weber, show that religious groups gained 754,138 members last year, bring- ing the grand total to 62,848,094. This means that church members in proportion to total population is about sixty per cent. According to the statistics, the Roman Catholic Church is the largest single de- nomination in this country, with estimated adult membership of 15,492,016. Among the Protestant sects, the Baptist bodies, collectively, led with 10,332,005 and the Methodists followed, with 9,108,359 mem- | bers. i ed The Atlantic-Gulf and West \Indies Steamship Lines, of which the Mallory Line is a,member, have acquired by purchase from the Inc. the Gulf and Southern Eastern Steamship Lines, | !
