Before the 1913° Army campaign, Major Charles Daly, the coach, told Army’s student manager to sched- ule a team for the third Saturday in October. “Get some Western college that will not make it too intcresting” , the Army coach Z- Jb i The. yqung manager pondered possible opponents, and , discov- ered that an obscure ‘football team from the midwest had roll- ed up 102 points on St. Viator’ “Here is the team”, thought he. “Good publicity, no danger”. The name of the team was Notre Dame. What followed is history. Notre Dame won in an upset, 35-13, principally because of an end named Knute Rockne, a boy who had a roommate ramed Gus Dorais. The Dorais-to-Rockne ferward passing combination brought victory to the Fighting Irish. That game © lifted Notre Dame out of obscurity into the lime- light as a gridiron power. That game, before 3,000 spectators who paid nothing, helped more than any other single contest to establish the forward pass as an offensive weapon. Notre Dame completed 12 pass- es out of 19, an average that would be high today But the s was not new. Field- ing Yost’s teams at Michigan had been using it since about the turn of the century There have been 24 Army- Notre Dame games. The 1933 game, October 29. is the 25th. Army has won five, tied two. Notre Dame has won 17. There never Was a game be- tween these two teams that wasnt’ a thriller. It doesn’t matter if one team is undefeated and the other is mediocre. Past records can be forgotten. This year Notre Dame is unbeaten, but holds thre ene-touchdown victories. ASSOCIATED PRESS SPORTLIGHT By DILLON GI GRAHAM AP Feature Service Writer "4 a | WOMAN SWIMS UNDER WATER 303 FEET By SAM JACKSON AP Feature Service Writer SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 28.— The world’s underwater swim- ming record for women, which stood for more than 40 years, has been broken by an _ 18-year-old college girl who dosn’t even take her swimming seriously. It was in 1895 that Anne John- son of Salford, England, swam 151 feet 6 inches without coming up for air. Now Ruth Kahl has gone 303 feet—exactly twice the distance you'll find listed in the sports records books. Experts say they can think of no record in any sport that has been beaten more decisively That Ruth’s performance was: no freak is attested by her week- ly exhibitions at Santa Cruz, a popular California beach resort. Ruth has been swimming every Saturday night ‘before thousands of spectators”, relates Skip Lit- tlefield, her professional. “We let the best men swimmers see how far they can go under water, and then Ruth dives in and beats them. Duke Wes Surprised That usually takes about 270 fcet, a big gain on the women’s ‘cord in itself. It requires Ruth to stay under water about two minutes. As soon as she’s beaten (he best man’s mark, we send in guards to stop her and avoid un- necessary strain”. The famous Duke Kahanamo- ku and his swimming troupe were at Santa Cruz last summer and were amazed at the “girl subma- rine”. None of the islanders, men cr women, could equal her. A report has spread around that Miss Kahl had great diffi- culty learning to swim on the sur- face but readily took to her fish- like underwater performance. “That’s ridiculous”, says the girl herscif. “I've been swimming since I was 6 years old. As chil- dren we used to see who could stay under water the longest, so actually I've had plenty of ex- perience in that line”. Considers Men’s Mark She demonstrated with a erful craw] stroke and graceful dives. off the board. Coach Littlefield, who is tak- ing steps to have Ruth’s record officially listed, says her per- formance is the more remarkable because she is not a very tech- nically accomplished swimmer “She lacks rhythm and cordin- ation”, he says. Littlefield thinks that, with an improved stroke, bs) her unusual ability to stay below the surface, Miss Kahl might shoot for the. men’s under water mark. It is 343 feet and ld by Robert L.
