C. Perky for a right | of way, formerly used by the railroad but | now belonging to him, across the string of | | keys above Key West, The Citizen believes | some organized plan for saving the wooden | | bridges from destruction by fire should be | put into effect. Even if the county got,the | | would be some time before the Staté'High-/, |. way Department could find the funds to road bed and bridges, and it wotld take months to complete the job. | Therefore, something must be done to | prevent Key West again becoming an isolated city. The least the State Highway Department could do would be to install emergency telephones at all of the large wooden bridges. These would enable motorists discovering fires to call the Key | West fire department. The city ‘of Key West is vitally interested in keeping the | bridges open, so there should be no objec- | for that protection. In the event the State Highway De- partment fails to act upon this or any other | constructive suggestion for bridge protec- ‘tion, the Red Cross organization of Monroe | county should consider the installation of telephones at the bridges to enable motor- ists to report accidents and to call for as- | sistance, Such action rightfully comes un- | der program followed by the Red Cross on | all important highways. Our public officials should bring this matter to the attention of the State High- | way Department and the American Red Cross.
