All talk, even, of a balanced budget has prac- tically ceased, although a year or so ago it was predicted in high places that the na- tional expenditures would be held within the national income by 1939. Relief expenditures alone for the pres- ent fiscal year, ending June 30, will be $1,- 750,000,000, which is more than the entire national debt prior to the World War. The ' national debt is approaching the 40 billion ADVERTISING RATES known on application. Senator Harrison of Mississippi says the object of Congress at the moment is to make the United States tax-conscious. Aren't we all? Or is it more appropriate to:say tax-uneonscious, particularly around the Ides ¢f/March. At Key West you buy fish on ‘the hoof, so to speak. You go down to the docks where the fishermen keep their daily catches alive in submerged chicken coops to be dressed on purchase thereby assuring fresh fish for the Key Wester’s suppér.— > Fort Myers News-Press, The publicity March of Time has given Key West through its Vol. 4, No. 8 newsreel release is worth more to this com- munity than all the money spent for ad- -sertising in the past. The Chinese say that one picture is worth more than 10,000 words, but it is safe to say that this pic- as -turization is worth more than a_ million cnererds. In fact it is beyond calculation. The Citizen has warned several times « “2 that those waiting to advertise for sale the *. fax certificates held by the state of Flor- ida against their property until next year may find that it will develop into a costly delay.. They may shortly see themselves arrayed against bidders, if any credence is to be given rumors seeping into this office. - In Baker county, for instance, a swarm of competitive bidders rushed in and bid on a large tract of land, forcing the initial bid of $1,400 up to $22,481 The « redeemed, but at what price | tion! Verbum sap. dollar mark, or about $300 for every man, woman and child in When to this we add the enormous debts of state and local governments, with nearly all being steadily increased, the burden staggering. It is true that we are not yet as deeply in debt per capita as several other coun- tries, but with more billions being added continually, the debt problem is becoming serious. The funds derived from social se- curity taxes are being used for current ex- penses, and this device has served to slightly ease the strain on the treasury, al- though in reality it is increasing the gov- ernment’s obligations just the same. The debt situation should not be con- sidered from a partisan political point of is . view, but as a problem tobe solved through the cooperation of all officials and citizens. It-is ¢vident that-there is something wrong with policies: which permit such a situation to continue and grow. worse. | SIDELIGHTS By MARCY B.
