NO MORE FRIED CAT For years on end I have. ran- sacked .Washington markets and restaurants for the making of that delectable dish, fried cat— | catfish rolled in corn meal and i fried to a crisp golden browm— but to date have succeeded in scaling down the culinary social ladder no lower than shad and hardhead. Washington has out- grown its bringingup, and some proprietors or servers in the fine cafes are merely spoofing when they pretend not to understand when I ask for fried cat. I enter- j}tain a suspicion that many of them were brought-up on it, but with their social struggles in the big city are trying to forget. In one high-collared eating place where I asked for fried cat. a foreign-looking waiter raised his eyebrows in quizzical grimace and departed kitchenward—to re- iturn presently with the polite in- formation, audibly delivered, that they were not raised hereabout, or something to the effect that they were not allowed te shoot them anymore—as if I had_ord- ered a catamount or a vessel.
