Nathan Chamber Of Commerce Makes ‘Amendments To Constitution Numerous Visitors Marvel Over Rare Specimens At Local Tropical Aquarium SHOWS STRAIN OF AIRPLANES WITH BANNERS CITES MANY DIFFICULTIES THAT ARE ENCOUNTERED IN FLYING ADVERTISING PENNANTS Very few people, who, watch- ing the planes which fly banners , over our glorious Florida, adver- tising this and that, are aware of the difficulties and mental strain the pilots experience in doing this sort of flying. Getting these long banners off the earth without wrecking the plane is an accom- plishment in itself. since the weight of the banner and “drag” means that the plane is on the point of “stalling” at all times. A stall so close to the ground would be fatal We heard an interesting story the other day about one of, Flori- da’s prominent business execu- tives, Mr. Ben Thyson. His hobby is flying and he pilots his plane whenever possible in making business trips. Some time ago he was at the Municipal Airport at Houston, Texas. Doing seme “peeking chair” fiying at the air- port one rainy day, some of the “boys” suggested that he would get a thrill flying a banner. After more talk the idea be- car nore engrossing, and clear- ing skies offered the opportunity. Knowing his limitations as a pilot, “the boys’ ‘suddenly, found they | had encouraged Something which they feared might net work out ell. It was finally decide? to have him “take off” a few times to practice getting away quickly, and then the momentous minute arrived when, with three hundred feet of rope attached to the plane, and a y banner laid down behind him, the signal was given to “go.” Many a fingernail was bitten ply by those who kidded h'm into the try. Fortunately the fence eared, a turn into the wind gave a chance for some altitude, and over the city he went, with little thought from those that look up that a chap was perspir- ing greatly up there as he fought off stalls.
