PRACTICAL EDUCATION A thoughtful contribution to the dis- cussion regarding what is desirable in the way of presert-day education was made by Dr. John J. Tigert, president of the University of Florida, who declared that the true purpose of education is to fit the citizen to serve as well as to live. This is not impossible. It can be achieved by inflation without raising the standard of living at all and even in the face of a decreased standard of living. It can also be accomplished by increased production. Granting that the national income can be brought up to the 100 billion mark does not mean that the income of average of Americans will be raised. Such a result depends largely upon distribution. It may be that a small percentage of our popula- tion will secure the bulk of the increased income, even as a comparatively smail | group now secures incomes disproportion- ate to that of other social units. The individual in Key West, who .is interested in income should also remember that what he receives depends more upon what he himself attempts than upon what he persuades the government to under- take. No government .can permanently guarantee any standard of living to its people. That is something that the in- i dividual must accomplish for himself. Of course, most people realize that | | there are some economic injustices that ought to be remedied and that corrective action will help the average citizen. But, after all, the help that such measures will afford can only be a very small part of thé needed income.
