FRIDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1937. ~ Jwo’s Com By /AARGARET GUION ‘The Characters Nina, ex-debutante, impulsixe- ly married David, though fasci- nated by her stepfather. Now she loves David and loathes Richard. Richard, the suave, handsome stepfather, tried to entice Nina into a secret love affair. Honey, Nina's gay, childish mother who is wild about Rich- ard, develops @ serious heart ail- ment. David, a bright young auto sclesman with a small salary, adores Nina but finally leaves her, thinking shé has gone too far with Richard. Chapter 53 Heart Attack co ged awoke from a sleep that was almost like a coma, i was so deep; but the sharp g of the telephone brought her in- Stant alertness, This would be David. This was the sort of thing he’d do—decide, suddenly, in the early hours of the morning, that he had made a mis- take... tha’ he did still want her . . and call her, immediately .. . But as she reached for the in- strument, her eye fell on the clock by the bed and saw that it wasn’t the early hours of the morning :t all. It was nearly 10. It was gray and rainy—but it was lat- than it looked. Somehow, the latcness of the hour lowered her hopes. Gan. how dare you call me?” “But, my dear, I must speak to you. There's something ‘here’s absolutely nothing you can have to say to-me that I care to hear.” “Nina... : “Sf you call again, I shall hang ur.” he hung up, then. And, shak- ing with enger and nerves, she hung up again, three minutes later . ond ‘ive minutes after that. “}f2 waited 10 minutes, then, to trick: her, no doubt, into thinking it wes someone else. Almost—she didn’t answer, but the awful. fear that she miciht net be answerin? David, made her grab it at the last moment. : Nin», you've got to listen to me... She cut him off, for the fourth time. Fighteen minutes past 10. Almost 24 hours. since she had come home end. found David's note. She had been—dead, almost 4 hours. She got up and set the errolator going. She realized that she hod done nothing but drink .coffes, and wander from room to room with David's shoe-tree, anc cry, slecn ... ever since her return. She ought to call Honey, she _ suposed, “and make arrengements to store the furniture—there were _only eight days left now. But her erms and les felt heavy — as thou: she hac been drugged. It wes en effort, a physical effort, to Prise her -hair-brush to her hair: ard it was just ¢s hard to put her min‘ to work a caereictae ‘hen, and fed Dats ton his puppy biscuit, and waited for the toffee to be done. Maybe that would revive her. Maybe. ‘when che had dressed herself, and . token Button out. it would get hor started doing things, so that she would know how to go on. But she mede the mistake of go- int for David's note agein; and lis “We're through, Nina. Just let’s accept it...” was like a knife, twisted in a fresh wound. ‘Through. She must accept it then. It was all the and now David wanted to be rid ef her. But she couldn't go on without him. If there had been a vase or an imple- ment of any kind at hand she sure- ly would have brought it crashing down on his head. “Honey—is sick, Nina. Very.” She stopped her wild efforts sud- denly. For once, what he said, had a true ring to it. “You—mean that?” “This time I do, my dear. I mean it. You must come with me right away... I have a car down- stairs . “What . +. What ... Oh, why didn’t you tell me over the phone?” She forgot that she had cut nim off persistently. “T_tried to... It’s an attack...” “Wait here. I won't be a minute.” Nina flew int’ the bedroom. If it could be called a mercy, this new fear for Honey pushed her own sorrow into the background. She found that she wasn’t dead, 2fter all. She could move her arms and legs and rush into her clothes, be- cause she had to; and she could think, too. She thought to leave a note, in case David should come home. “David,” she scrawled on the back of an envelope. “Honey real- ly is sick, this time. Awfully. I'm going to her now. Please call me, David .. . Please!” And she ran to the house tele- ”| phone fastening her dress, and ,| called McDuff, the superintendent. “If any wires or messages come for me, will you please send them over to my mother’s house? I wouldn’t go in just yet. I’m going to look in at my office for an hour | or so, but I'll be back after that.” Dr. Langlothe, the specialist, would return in the afternoon. “Is she—frightened? Does she— | know, Dr. Fellows?” Honey’s side of it—her feelings —tortured Nina, as much as he> | own dread of losing her. “It's hard to tell, my dear,” the old doctor slipped an arm about | her shoulders. “She was in too great pain to think much of any- thing there, for a while, I fear . and now she is pretty well drugged.
